music in this innovative way,“ said legendary music industry executive and
Primary Wave Music talent manager Jerry Blair.

Leading Australian App developer welcomes iPhone OS4 as a boon to local developers2010-04-08T22:20:00Zleading-australian-app-developer-welcomes-iphone-os4-as-a-boon-to-local-developersApril 8th 2010
Leading Australian App developer welcomes iPhone OS4 as a boon to local developers
iPhone OS 4 with its support for multi-tasking, iBooks, Folders and more than 100 other features offers a significant opportunity for Australian smartphone app developers.
“By enabling multitasking in a way that is battery use friendly”, said David Keane, CEO BigTinCan, “Apple is providing a great new toolset that developers can use to improve existing apps and create exciting new apps”.
BigTinCan sees the ability for the iPhone to support a Voice over IP multi-taking app will allow us to offer what users have been asking for since the original launch of iPhone - the ability to use the phone with a VoIP service to replace their fixed home line or office PBX extension.
“We plan to launch a new version of our pioneering BigTinCan Connect for iPhone app that takes advantage of this new feature to help our customers free themselves from the fixed line”, said Mr Keane, “During our testing of VoIP we have been able to get more than 500 minutes of phone calls over a 1G data plan on leading Australian carriers - thats 500 minutes of calls on a $15 data plan - even better if you include WiFi access - not bad value!”
And the location based background multitasking extension, BigTinCan and other developers will be able to extend their mapping apps to provide information to the user as the are on the go. BigTinCan’s Mapper for iPhone will be improved to take advantage of this new toolset offering customers the ability to track routes and report information to the OSM mapping service whilst they are on the go.
BigTinCan believes that with iPhone OS 4 Apple has given developers the tools that will enable them to create a range of exciting new apps, many of which have not even been thought of yet.
BigTinCan apps are now available for download using from a smartphone at the Apple App Store and the BlackBerry App World

ph: 02 91915002New BigTinCan Connect puts a PABX in your pocket2010-03-03T01:43:00Zbigtincan-connect-aussie-editionBigTinCan is set to help more Australian homes and businesses cut loose the shackles of their fixed-line phone service by putting all of the power of a business telephony system into any mobile user's pocket as well as delivering even greater cost savings than regular mobile services. For home users, it means that friends and family can still call a mobile using a standard fixed-line phone number at fixed-line rates. Australian businesses, meanwhile, no longer need to invest tens of thousands of dollars on complex telephony 'PABX' systems or expensive multiple phone lines and can instead route calls cheaply through to the appropriate staff member's mobile phones. With BigTinCan Connect Australian Edition, users are provided with an in-bound local calling number, which becomes their "master number". This phone number is completely independent of any phone, which means if you move home, change jobs or buy a new mobile phone, you can still always be reached on the same telephone number. Additionally, users can set up "rules" which tell BigTinCan Connect what phone or phones to ring, what ring tone to use or whether the phone should be directed to voicemail and what voicemail message should be played. Having one phone number also means one BigTinCan voicemail system, which can also be accessed by your PC.Additionally, BigTinCan Connect lets mobile users take advantage of extremely low-call rates that can cut up to 80% percent of mobile phone rates and up to 100% percent of text messaging. BigTinCan also integrates voice over IP enabling free calls when connected to a wireless network and will soon be the first Australian mobile service to allow VoIP calling over mobile 3G data services with its upcoming release, which is scheduled to arrive before mid-year. "We believe that BigTinCan Connect is the most advanced mobile calling service in the world," said David Keane, BigTinCan's Chief Executive Officer. "And because BigTinCan is an Australian company and the application is developed from our headquarters in Northern Sydney, it means Australian users will always be the first to benefit from the new features and functionality we're rapidly rolling out for the platform like VoIP over 3G." Keane made the first demonstration of Connect Australian Edition at the MediaConnect Kickstart Forum, a conference that showcases the latest technology to IT journalists at Sanctuary Cove on the Gold Coast today. He told journalists that these features would allow businesses to migrate away from fixed-line phone services in much the same way that so many households have recently. Last week, in announcing its disappointing financial results Telstra noted the larger-than-expected number of Telstra users who had cancelled their fixed-line services. "Businesses need more power and flexibility than home users, which is why they invest in PABX telephony systems and multiple phone lines. However, with BigTinCan Connect a small or medium business can simply route calls to whichever staff member's phone line or voice box is appropriate. For example, you could set up a rule so that all calls from an important client go directly to the mobile of their account representative. If that person isn't available, the call can be routed to another account manager or transferred to a special voice mail greeting recorded specifically for that customer. And you don't need anything more than a mobile phone". "Traditional telephone companies are already suffering from user's moving away from fixed-line services and that's before applications like BigTinCan Connect have really found their place in the market. Soon user's will not only be able to bypass fixed-line charges, they'll also be able to use VoIP to avoid mobile calling rates - all while enjoying advanced calling features previously only available to large companies. My message to telephone carriers who think they're hurting now from these kinds of new technologies is 'you ain't seen nothing yet'." As well as BigTinCan Connect Australian Edition, in-bound calling numbers are now available in over 40 countries worldwide. BigTinCan is one of Australia's most successful smartphone systems developers with over 2 million users worldwide on its suite of iPhone, BlackBerry, Android and Windows Mobile platforms. These include BigTinCan Connect, as well as BigTinCan Maps, an open-source mapping service and BigTinCan BuzzMe a wildly popular smartphone alerting application. November
11, 2009 - BigTinCan is opening up its BuzzMe platform on BlackBerry
smartphones to 3rd party developers, allowing them to tap into the over 2
million users of the popular alert-management application.
Announced
at the 2009 BlackBerry Developers Conference in San Francisco today, the BuzzMe
Open Plugin Architecture (BOPA) will allow users to control alerts and actions
for calls and messages, and enable 3rd party applications on the BlackBerry
platform to take advantage of the open API.
BuzzMe,
one of the most downloaded applications on BlackBerry smartphones, controls the
LED color, and vibration length for calls, emails and SMS/MMS messages, and
even provides great features like a customizable missed call reminder, and
“facedown mode” which leverages the accelerometer in the BlackBerry Storm and
BlackBerry Storm2 to stop vibration and other alerts from activating when the smartphone
is placed face down.. The basic version of BuzzMe is available as a free
download and the PRO version is $2.99, both available on BlackBerry App World™.
BigTinCan
CEO David Keane said the initiative was a response to user demand.
"Thousands
and thousands of BuzzMe users contact BigTinCan every month asking for ways to be
able to control other applications using the BuzzMe interface," he said.
"They want to be able to control how those applications alert them, and
they want to be able to set those alerts all in a single place that is easy to
use and that they trust."
BOPA
has already received the support of successful BlackBerry developers like
Orangatame, the developer of OpenBeak (formerly TwitterBerry), a leading mobile
client for posting updates to Twitter from a BlackBerry smartphone.
Jason
Schroeder, founder of Orangatame, is excited about what BigTinCan has created
with BOPA. "We see this as a great way to allow OpenBeak users to get
access to the features of BuzzMe and to integrate their notifications into one
place. We particularly like that BigTinCan has taken a standards-based approach
by using existing BlackBerry APIs that makes it easy for developers like us to
work with them,” says Schroeder.
David
Keane, CEO BigTinCan says, “We are very happy to have the support of Orangatame
and we welcome them as a partner for the BOPA project, with their industry
leading OpenBeak client integrated for alerting into BuzzMe, we will be able to
offer a powerful solution to BlackBerry developers worldwide.”
BOPA
is an open architecture built around an open API that will be very familiar to
BlackBerry developers. It is based on the RIM GLOBAL EVENTS API and allows a
3rd party app to register a global event and communicate with BuzzMe through
this event whenever there is an action that has to be communicated to the user.
The user can then decide how they want to be alerted to the event - as a LED
flash, TONE, or vibration.
To
ensure that all plugin 3rd party applications are well-behaved and conform to
the API and BOPA specification, developers must apply for an "appid"
in advance of their application release. Developers will be given an appid that
is used by the GLOBAL EVENTS API and is passed to BuzzMe with any alert
information.
BOPA
helps BlackBerry developers by:
•
making life easier, as developers no longer have to worry
about how the alerts from their application are presented to the user
•
making applications more appealing to end users, as it
allows the user to control in an single place how alerts work in a way that
they can easily see, control and ensure they know what alert comes for any
application
•
getting access to the “facedown” mode in BuzzMe PRO that
allows users to silence events when the phone is set “facedown”
•
gives access to the over 2 million BuzzMe users on
BlackBerry smartphones, who would be able to see any 3rd party applications as
part of the BOPA family and will therefore be more likely to want to download
and install that application
•
being tremendously easy to use and work with, BigTinCan
provides sample code, and full example applications that developers can
download and use
BOPA
echoes the “BlackBerry Flow”
principle introduced by Research In Motion (RIM) at the 2009 BlackBerry
Developers Conference. BOPA echoes the “BlackBerry
Flow” principle introduced by Research In Motion (RIM) at the 2009
BlackBerry Developers Conference, which describes the approach of developing
custom applications for BlackBerry that transparently link to the other
applications on the smartphone to offer an intuitive and deeply integrated user
experience.
BOPA
will be available for users in BuzzMe version 3 due for release in January 2009. It features an extremely simple user interface, whereby users select your
application from a list of applications in the PLUGINS menu in BuzzMe.
Leveraging
on the push service of the BlackBerry platfrom, users of BuzzMe version 3 will
be pushed information about new updates and integrated apps when they become
available. The user simply selects your app and then sets the
configuration for alerts from the app.
In
Version 3.0 users will be able to select the
•
LED color
•
Vibration length
•
Facedown mode on/off
•
TONE for the alert
Developers can
register their application through the BigTinCan website at www.bigtincan.com/bopa where they can apply for
an appid. BigTinCan will respond to approved developers with an appid that is
built into the 3rd party application. There is no need to submit any binary of
your application.

Sydney 1st October 2009
BigTinCan today launches the maps.bigtincan.com service and the BigTinCan Mapper products for RIM BlackBerry and Google Android smartphones - with versions for Apple iPhone, and Windows Mobile coming soon. The suite of web and smartphone tools solves the problem of adding bespoke content to mapping services whilst avoiding high fees from map licensees in the process.
Map the World
BigTinCan maps is a complete suite of web tools, and smartphone applications, that let people anywhere in the world take part in the global Open Street Maps community (OSM - the “open source equivalent to Google Maps” taking the world by storm) and "Map the World" by adding Points of Interest (POIs) easily and quickly from a smartphone whenever and wherever they are. It is then possible to view those POIs on maps.bigtincan.com.
From your smartphone users can add details about the their local area and community - add local details including marking shops, restaurants, movie theaters, post boxes and much more, then upload it using BigTinCan's new open mapping protocol directly to the OSM servers. You'll need an account with OSM to be able to send POIs which is free at www.openstreetmap.org
According to the blogs “Here’s a community that has created this phenomenon which is just about ready to virally spread around the world. A community which is bubbling with energy and excitement because its growth is making the bigwigs sit up and take notice” (http://bytesbite.me/tag/osm/)
Fix the World
BigTinCan is also releasing the TidyMyStreet.com community portal that allows people to add information about their “street bugs” that needs to be fixed in their local area. For example users can map potholes in the street, graffiti on walls, spilt rubbish, directly from the web or from their smartphone. This information is then made available globally to local government or other groups that are then able to correct these problems and update the maps in real time.
Community Services
As part of the promise of OSM, BigTinCan is making these services available free to all users. Any data entered into the map is made part of the global OSM database and is then available for others to freely see and use - in true open source spirit
Commercial Maps Service
In addition to the free community services, BigTinCan is also announcing the availability of the initial release of our commercial Web Mapping Service (WMS) that provides access to customised, rendered map tiles and custom layers, map overlays, integrated points of interests and other services built upon OSM map data. The commercial service lets companies, local councils, government departments, and other organizations create custom maps and integrate them into their own website or other online service.
BigTinCan operates a worldwide distributed system with data center operations in The Netherlands, USA, and Australia that can deliver rendered, customized maps to groups of any size.
WMS packages start at less than A$100 per month and can service business of all size. The WMS services is being released on a limited availability basis now with full release in Q1 2010
BigTinCan Mapper and BigTinCan Mapper Pro
BigTinCan is also announcing the availability of our BigTinCan Mapper for BlackBerry and Android and BigTinCan Mapper Pro smartphone application for BlackBerry.
BigTinCan Mapper is a cool app that let you take part in the global OSM community and "map your world" by adding POIs easily and quickly from a smartphone whenever and wherever you are, including the ability to post your “street bugs” directly to the TidyStreet.bigtincan.com site. Mapper PRO is the extension to the BigTinCan Mapper product that allows you to use all the great features of BigTinCan Mapper, plus lets you recored and share your routes - with the TrackMyRoute feature. Mapper Pro is priced at US$4.99 and coming to major smartphone application stores worldwide over then next 10 days.
With Mapper Pro you can track your route live, check out the GPS details and route status in real time, then send your route as either a ALX or GPE file direct to your computer; to a router tracking website; or view the route on your smartphone. You can even overlay multiple routes on the smartphone screen to compare your tracks.
Mapper lets you view your world using a range of maps views (using different layers including tourist information, bike paths and even a midnight view amongst others).
Mapper lets you overlay GPS information from your smartphone directly on the map, and lets you jump right to MyLocation anytime.
You can also ShareMyLocation using Email, SMS, or BlackBerry PIN. ShareMyLocation sends your GPS details, plus a link to maps.bigtincan.com where you can see your location on the OSM map. This page is optimised for viewing on a smartphone - so you can use this to let your friends know where you are, or to send your business location directly to your customer's phone.
BigTinCan Mapper and BigTinCan Mapper Pro are available now for keyboard based RIM BlackBerry and the RIM BlackBerry Storm. Versions for Apple iPhone, Google Android smartphones and Windows Mobile smartphones are coming soon.

http://www.tidymystreet.comAussie developer BigTinCan hits number one with wildly popular BlackBerry application2009-09-08T03:05:00Zaussie-developer-bigtincan-hits-number-one-with-wildly-popular-blackberry-applicationAustralian mobile developer BigTinCan is on top of the world after it’s BuzzMe Blackberry application climbed to the number one spot globally in the Blackberry App World last week. BuzzMePro was the number one paid application on AppWorld, while its free counterpart was positioned a close second behind the hugely popular Pandora mobile music service. The incredible popularity of BuzzMe and it’s other Blackberry applications has seen the company rack up over a million downloads on the platform. BigTinCan managing director David Keane said the company was winning between 10,000 and 20,000 new users every day.BigTinCan's flagship application lets smartphone users save up to 50 per cent on local calls and messaging and much more when dialing internationally. It also adds a raft of additional smart calling options like enabling true multimedia messaging and recording phone calls. "The rate of growth we've been able to achieve with our mobile applications is simply phenomenal and having a registered user base of more than a million users gives us a really strong platform to extend the business." Keane said. "These growth rates are not showing any sign of leveling off, so it's difficult to forecast just how high our registered user count will go." With the BlackBerry Curve 8520 being released later this month, BigTinCan have launched a competition in partnership with BlackBerry to give away five of the new handsets to its registered users.Users are encouraged to make a video of themselves making use of a BigTinCan application on a BlackBerry phone with the theme 'Disco' (see www.bigtincan.com/september for details) for the chance to win one of the new handsets. "The challenge for all mobile developers is to get noticed amidst the thousands of applications users can choose from. However, once you make that break though and have a strong user base and a reputation for making quality applications, it becomes much easier. As we keep engaging with our users with promotions, give-aways and quality applications, they will continue to respect and identify with the BigTinCan brand."Media ContactManaging Director David Keane is available for interviews or for more information and can be reached on +61 2 8659 6969 or via email at david.keane@bigtincan.com.Slash iPhone costs with BigTinCan2009-06-24T14:00:00Zslash-iphone-costs-with-bigtincan Australian iPhone and smartphone users can save up to 50 per cent on their phone and messaging charges with a new Australian-developed mobile application called BigTinCan Connect.
With the launch this week of the first pricing plans for iPhone 3GS, BigTinCan managing director David Keane is encouraging consumers to understand that they are not locked in to using the major mobile carriers to place calls or send text and MMS messages.
"BigTinCan users can slash their mobile bills without having to use a VoIP application from a WiFi zone" said BigTinCan managing director and founder David Keane. "So we're urging Australians who are buying the new iPhone 3GS, or indeed any Smartphone, to take this into consideration when deciding what plan to take up."
"For many users, they will get greater value by taking out smaller plans or pre-paid offerings and using applications like BigTinCan to place the majority of their calls and messages."
BigTinCan (http://www.bigtincan.com) offers calls at the rate of 30 cents per minute to both Australian mobiles and ordinary landlines. Text and MMS messages can be sent for just 10 cents a message. Unlike most mobile networks there are no flag-fall charges and calls are made on a per-second basis. For travellers and those who regularly dial internationally, the savings are even greater with the same low rates charged for calls made to dozens of international destinations including the USA, UK, New Zealand, Singapore, China and Canada.
Importantly, BigTinCan does not place calls from the handset over the Internet as do VOIP applications like Skype. While both offer low rates, BigTinCan uses the caller's regular mobile service so quality is indistinguishable from standard calls and users do not have to be connected to a Wifi wireless network or hotspot.
As well as cheaper calls, the BigTinCan smartphone application offers a host of additional features and services including face dialing, call recording, the ability to record and send voice notes and much more.
BigTinCan can be thought of as a stored calling card on your smartphone. Users place their call using the BigTinCan application and this sends a very small data message to the BigTinCan system, with the user's telephone number and who is being called. BigTinCan then calls the users phone and upon that request being answered, proceeds to calls and connect the intended receiver. A call is never actually placed by the caller, yet still the conversation takes place as would a normal phone call.
The application is available on the iPhone, Blackberry, Android and Windows Mobile platforms. Users can also access all of their messages, sent files and call recordings from their PC using BigT inCan's web service.
BigTinCan is also the developer of BuzzMe, a hugely popular Blackberry application that lets Blackberry users have greater control over the vibration feature. BuzzMe is on track to reach a million users worldwide by August and is currently one of the top ten Blackberry AppWorld applications.
"BigTinCan is a an Australian company working from a small office in Cremorne, North Sydney, but we have already established a track record of building applications that are capable of gaining a massive worldwide user base," said Keane. We believe BigTinCan can redefine low-cost mobile calling just as Skype did for internet-based phone calls."
While BigTinCan's standard service is compelling in its own right, the company will roll-out a raft of additional services and features, most of which can only currently be found on high-end company telephone systems. These include inbound numbers, rules -based routing, caller ID routing, and advanced call controls and voice mail.
"It will be like carrying around a corporate PABX in your pocket," said Keane.
Keane and BigTinCan co-founder Duane Groth already have an imposing track record of building high-value communications companies. Keane founded leading wireless broadband service provider Veritel which was acquired by BigAir and collaborated with Groth to build call bypass provider vCall, which was sold to investor partners in 2005. Groth previously created and founded e164.org, a major international telephone number exchange. BigTinCan will initially target the Australian, US and UK markets before moving into other territories.
