Sydney, April 4, 2012—FalconStor Software, Inc. (NASDAQ:
FALC), a market leader in disk-based data protection, today announced the
results of IDG Research Services’ quick poll, “Backup Technologies; the Tale of
the Tape.” The independent survey shows that
deduplication has entered the mainstream and is effectively addressing the
backup and data storage issues caused by exponential data growth. Large
enterprises are leading the way – with mid-size companies and small businesses
not far behind – in deploying and reporting significant benefits of the
technology, including faster backups, quicker recovery, more efficient data
management and lower operating costs.
Through its online poll, IDG Research
collected information from 215 qualified IT leaders at large, medium and small
companies across various industries regarding their use of backup and
deduplication technologies. Key survey findings include:
·
Fifty-nine percent of all respondents either
have a deduplication solution in place (43 percent) or plan to implement one
(16 percent).
·
An aggregated 52 percent of large
enterprises, 32 percent of mid-size companies and 28 percent of SMBs currently
have a deduplication solution in place.
·
An aggregated 60 to 70 percent of respondents
already have achieved or expect to realize faster backups, quicker recovery and
improved efficiency with deduplication.
·
Forty percent of all respondents, regardless
of company size, retain backup data for more than three years.
“The
escalating growth of digital information over the last decade, which has
severely stressed traditional methods of data protection and storage, will continue
unabated for the foreseeable future. Migrating to new technologies such as
deduplication for optimizing backup and storage has become an essential
priority for data center managers everywhere,” said Janet King, general manager
and vice president of IDG Research Services. “This survey shows that
deduplication has been deployed and tested by a wide range of midsize to large
enterprises, demonstrating its benefits to the rest of the market and
accelerating adoption of the technology.”
The
survey data also revealed that an aggregated 59 percent of companies polled are
using a combination of disk-based backup and tape storage; and an aggregated 39
percent are using disk-based backup with deduplication. Tape continues to be a
cost-effective medium for data archiving, especially as businesses are required
to retain records for longer periods of time, while disk-based systems are deployed
for faster backup and recovery. Deduplication increases the efficiency of both
disk and tape, optimizing the management of both short- and long-term storage.
“Because of the increasing amount of
data that must be protected and available for immediate recovery, companies
need to be smarter about the way they backup, archive and store data,” said
Darrell Riddle, senior director of product marketing at FalconStor. “Storage
resources are taxed by excessive amounts of duplicate data, which costs
companies money. FalconStor’s deduplication technology not only reduces the
amount of data stored or sent over a network, it dramatically increases
operational efficiency and lowers the cost of doing business. With cloud-based
storage becoming more prevalent, businesses will be transmitting an
exponentially increasing amount of duplicate data over the wire – we want to
stop that madness.”
The
FalconStor®
Virtual Tape Library (VTL) solution, one of the industry’s fastest
and most flexible disk-based backup and deduplication systems, is widely used
by enterprises to optimize data backup, recovery, and storage. The FalconStor
VTL solution provides customers the flexibility to optimize backup for speed
and efficiency by tailoring deduplication processes to the needs of their
environment. The system offers an array of deduplication options, including
inline, concurrent, post-processing or no deduplication – and the flexibility
to deploy them in multiple configurations to match types of data and available
storage.
Study
demographics
IDG Research polled 215 qualified IT
leaders in various industries regarding the current and future use of backup
and deduplication technologies. At the time of the survey 33 percent of these
individuals worked at firms with more than 5,000 employees; 24 percent had
between 1,001 and 5,000 employees; 35 percent had between 101 and 1,000
employees; and eight percent had between 50 and 100 employees.

FalconStore Automated Service-orientated Disaster Recovery for any Environment2012-08-21T05:15:00Zfalconstore-automated-service-orientated-disaster-recovery-for-any-environment
FalconStor
Enables Automated Service-Oriented Disaster Recovery for Any Environment
FalconStor’s
RecoverTrac 2.5 DR Automation Tool Ensures Rapid Recovery of IT Services
In
the Event of Data Center Failure
SYDNEY,
August 21, 2012—FalconStor Software, Inc. (NASDAQ:
FALC), a market leader in disk-based data protection, today announced the
latest version of RecoverTrac™ technology, offering customers fully automated recovery
of complete IT services in any data center environment. Key enhancements in RecoverTrac
2.5 enable lightning fast recovery in mixed physical and virtual environments,
failover and failback between dissimilar hardware and non-disruptive disaster
recovery (DR) testing. As a standard feature of FalconStor Continuous Data
Protector (CDP) and FalconStor Network Storage Server (NSS) solutions, the RecoverTrac
DR automation tool allows customers to protect critical business services and
recover these services in minutes.
“At the core of every business lies
its most valuable asset; data, which must be protected against human error,
equipment failure and natural disasters while at the same time always being
available,” said Darrell Riddle, senior director of product marketing at
FalconStor Software. “Every minute companies focus on recovering data and
critical IT services is time lost running the business. By being able to recover
automatically multiple services and systems, or even an entire site, in minutes
rather than hours or even days, RecoverTrac 2.5 gives IT administrators
something they aren't getting enough of – sleep."
IT managers need to manage and protect
mixed environments composed of physical and virtual assets and equipment from
multiple vendors. RecoverTrac 2.5 technology is optimized for today’s heterogeneous
data centers with enhancements that increase the speed and flexibility of DR
automation:
Lightning
fast recovery: Performance improvements and the
ability to recover multiple machines simultaneously return organizations to
full productivity in minutes.
Any-to-any
recovery: Integration with VMware and Hyper-V
and support for hardware templates enables failover and failback between any
combination of physical and virtual servers and between dissimilar hardware.
Greater
VMware support: VMware vSphere 5 and VMware cluster
support enables load balancing and high-availability configurations.
Automated
push-button DR rehearsal: Allows busy IT
managers to test and refine recovery processes on a regular basis without
disrupting business operations.
“IT resilience and data protection are
key elements to a company’s success,” said John Morency, research vice
president at Gartner. “Businesses must be able to recover quickly following a
disruptive event, whether it is a lost file or the failure of a complex
application or service. In failing to execute well-tested disaster recovery,
companies face the prospect of significant downtime, diminished employee
productivity, and lost revenue. Failover/failback automation ensures that IT
managers can deploy and test DR processes far more efficiently and effectively –
resulting in a significant reduction of the business impact of planned
downtime.”
“Our
customers cannot afford the lost data and lack of response to customers because
their systems are offline. In looking for a solution that would ensure their
data is fully protected, it is imperative we can offer fast and flexible data
recovery. FalconStor RecoverTrac 2.5 stands out for its ability to operate
within any physical, virtual or hybrid environment, allowing our users to
recover services and data at any time they needed,” said Mark Gluckman,
managing director of Regal-IT in Sydney..

FalconStor Software Ensures IT Disaster Preparation for Greater London Authority for Summer Olympics2012-08-08T03:06:00Zfalconstor-software-ensures-it-disaster-preparation-for-greater-london-authority-for-summer-olympicsMELVILLE, N.Y., August 7, 2012—FalconStor Software,
Inc. (NASDAQ: FALC), a market leader in disk-based data protection,
today announced that the Greater London Authority (GLA) implemented the
FalconStor Network Storage Server (NSS) solution and FalconStor’s
RecoverTrac™ technology to ensure disaster preparedness and to handle
GLA’s significant data growth prior to the London Olympic Games. The GLA
replaced its tape-based backup and recovery system to ensure data
availability and quick recovery in four hours or less, estimating a
savings of approximately 90,000 ($139,000) annually. The GLA,
which provides IT support and services to the mayor’s office and the
London Assembly, implemented the disk-based backup technology to ensure
complete data protection and business continuity for events such as the
mayoral elections, the Royal Jubilee celebrations and the Olympic Games.
The authority worked with local storage integrator Cristie Data to
deploy the RecoverTrac tool
and FalconStor NSS, along with Nexsan storage, to give the organization
storage virtualization, data replication and automated disaster
recovery capabilities. With 60 terabytes of data and the eyes of the
world focused on the city, GLA data is now replicated to an off-site
data center and can be automatically recovered in the event of an IT
disaster. “Prior to the 2008 mayoral elections, a water main
burst near City Hall and our power went out. Had it stayed out for much
longer, it would have taken us three days to recover our data,” said
David Munn, head of GLA information technology. “We could not risk
something like that during the London Games or any other major event
happening in 2012. FalconStor’s storage management and replication
technology ensures that we can keep mission-critical data available,
regardless of any disaster.” The GLA estimates it will gain a
full payback on its disaster recovery investment in four years. The
organization now has quick recovery during data center outages, an 80
percent reduction in energy consumption and a storage solution capable
of accommodating continued data growth. “We've given the GLA an
infrastructure that's much easier to use and has more flexibility,
replacing the previous expensive and slow backup solution of saving data
to magnetic tape,” said Ryan Smith, sales director at Cristie Data.
“GLA’s enterprise-capacity license means it can add more storage and
data on demand, accommodating future needs without any business
disruption.” “A world-class city like London needs the protection
of automated disaster recovery, particularly in a time of massive data
growth and civic activity,” said Darrell Riddle, senior director of
product marketing at FalconStor Software. “Unfortunately, there will not
be any gold medal awarded for prudent data protection planning during
the London Olympics – but if there were, the GLA would be in a strong
position to win it. FalconStor ensures that anyone using GLA’s IT
services during the Olympic games or for normal government operations is
not left in the dark.” About FalconStor FalconStor

FalconStor
VTL 7.5 Offers Speed and Flexibility with More Deduplication Choices Than Anyone
Else, Optimizing Data Protection for Reliability and Efficiency
SYDNEY.,
April 27, 2012—FalconStor Software, Inc. (NASDAQ:
FALC), the market leader in disk-based data protection, today announced the
latest version of FalconStor Virtual Tape Library (VTL), offering
an expanded set of powerful deduplication methods and industry-leading performance.
FalconStor VTL 7.5 provides customers the flexibility to optimize backup for
speed and efficiency by tailoring deduplication processes to the needs of their
environment while delivering twice the deduplication rate of any competing

customers can deploy FalconStor Turbo deduplication with post and concurrent
processing, reducing input/output (I/O) cycles and boosting performance up to
300 percent. In performance tests of a four-node cluster configuration, FalconStor
VTL 7.5 demonstrated the fastest sustained deduplication speeds in the
industry: more than 28 terabytes per hour with inline deduplication and more
than 40 terabytes per hour with post processing.
“Our rock-solid global deduplication
solutions deliver on-demand scalability of performance and storage capacity, helping
customers minimize backup windows,” said Darrell Riddle, senior director of
product marketing for FalconStor Software. “We have all the right functionality
to allow customers to optimize their IT infrastructure, align data protection
processes with business goals, and effectively manage data growth. More
efficient storage and optimized operations not only save money but helps
businesses walk a greener path.”
Additional
FalconStor VTL 7.5 Enhancements:
Improved scalability
and performance with the Symantec Open Storage Technology (OST) platform with
the introduction of OST .Next, allowing up to two million backups in an
eight-node cluster – making years of critical data immediately available when
needed.
Scalable by either adding
nodes or adding storage – an option not available from other deduplication
vendors – allowing customers to scale two
different ways and dramatically reduce future storage spending while improving
efficiency.
Easy expansion of data
repository nodes, lowering the cost of initial storage investment while
providing capacity to grow with business demands.
Reduced memory
requirements achieved by replicating only unique data, increasing the
efficiency of LAN and WAN environments.
Advanced security
options with extended Advanced Encryption Standard (AES), tape-shredding
functionality, full replication encryption, and the addition of Federal Information Processing Standards
(FIPS) support for government agencies.
"Companies
can no longer manage their unabated data growth using traditional backup
solutions such as tape," said Robert Amatruda, research director, data protection
and recovery at IDC. "FalconStor VTL 7.5 provides customers with the
benefit of leveraging disk for backup and flexible deduplication options
to address their ever-changing data protection requirements.”
