Inexpensive & ubiquitous: Inmarsat BGAN M2M forms an essential component in Smart Grid, Workforce Mobility, Disaster Response and SCADA applications

TC Communications is pleased to announce the launch of the new Inmarsat BGAN M2M service - a critical link in efficient, cost effective Machine to Machine connectivity. The Inmarsat BGAN M2M end-to-end IP data service is a low-cost solution to support M2M applications that would typically transmit between 1Mb and 50Mb per terminal per month.

The BGAN M2M solution offers a scalable solution for smart metering, SCADA, meteorological and environmental data reporting, remote asset monitoring and other telemetry requirements and is targeted at a range of market sectors, including utilities, oil and gas, civil government and industry.

The combination of Inmarsat’s network and TC’s indigenous infrastructure means that a ‘3G-like’ connection can be provided to any device or site regardless of how remote the location might be. As so many companies are already using 3G networks to monitor their critical infrastructure, TC’s new service means that these organisations can enjoy the same monitoring capability when outside of 3G coverage, as well as having access to a backup within 3G coverage should their 3G service become congested or unavailable.

The BGAN M2M service is launching with the Hughes 9502 BGAN M2M terminal and TC has worked with Inmarsat and an important range of clients within Austral-Asia to ensure the terminal meets market requirements.

“Feedback from our clients to date has been excellent," said Todd McDonell, CEO, TC Communications. "We have been working with the utility, resource and governments sector for a number of years and the Inmarsat suite of tracking and telemetry services is a crucial component of any efficient M2M network in a country as vast (and often remote) as Australia.”

“Our beta trial customers have all been impressed by the capability and reliability of BGAN M2M terminals and amazed by how inexpensive their data traffic was to transmit, so much so that we have a significant number of terminals on backorder as a direct result of our pre-launch trials and evaluations."

TC views the M2M market as such an important sector in the region that a new division, TC Telemetry, has been established with the sole purpose of designing, deploying and supporting a complete range of M2M, SCADA and Telemetry solutions. These solutions all have the option of terminating data directly into one of the two TC Points of Presence (PoPs) in Australia.

“We installed our initial PoP back in 2007 to provide a direct interconnect to Inmarsat's core network in response to our security conscious government and corporate clients who did not want their data to traverse the Internet" continued McDonell. "However, demand for this service has grown so significantly that we have recently installed our second PoP and now boast the best quality, most reliable BGAN network infrastructure in the region. As a result, we have two direct connections into the Inmarsat network, ensuring that our clients have the most robust and reliable connection to the Inmarsat network available in Australia."
