Gordon returns to The Age

Josh Gordon is returning to The Age, as acting state political editor. He signed up with the paper after finishing four years with RMIT ABC Fact Check as economics/finance editor and senior journalist. Gordon was previously with the Age from 2000 to 2017, with his roles including economics correspondent, state economics reporter, political editor, and state political editor. Warhurst to lead the Mercury

Craig Warhurst has been appointed the new editor of Tasmania newspaper The Mercury. He will succeed Jenna Cairney, who stepped down for a new role as Tasmania Premier Peter Gutwein’s communications, media and PR director.  She had edited the Mercury since January 2020, when she came down from Queensland after turning over editorship of The Townsville Bulletin to Warhurst.   Warhurst was previously editor of the Sunshine Coast Daily, Bundaberg NewsMail and The Gympie Times. New PRIA leadership in office

The Public Relations Institute of Australia (PRIA) has elected new national leaders, with Shane Allison as national president and Helen Hutchings as deputy national president for a third term.  The owner of media relationship management platform Public Address, Allison stepped up to the plate on account of having been honorary treasurer and having served as president of PRIA NSW. He will succeed Leigh McClusky. Dye to join Today FM breakfast

Mark Dye has joined Tova O’Brien as co-host in Today FM New Zealand’s breakfast show, when the brand launches in 2022.  The show will be Dye’s first gig since his afternoon show at Newstalk ZB.  He is also a TV host and CEO of a medical cannabis firm. “I’m thrilled to be alongside Tova and to be part of Today FM. The time is right for a station like Today, we all need a little less divisiveness and a bit more optimism,” said Dye. “Mark has a huge passion for news. Mediaworks acquires Humm FM

Mediaworks New Zealand has officially acquired 106.2 Humm FM in Auckland. The plan calls for Humm FM staff to move into MediaWorks’ HQ at Hargreaves Street in Auckland in 2022 and to change frequency from 106.2FM to 104.2FM. First going on-air in 2011, Humm FM offers classic and contemporary Indian music hits. “Humm FM attracts around 31,800 listeners every week and we see real potential around growing its audience through our digital audio app rova and serving Indian communities across the country. RNZ introduces digital youth platform

Radio New Zealand (RNZ) has introduced a new digital content platform geared to young Kiwis, called TAHI. Taken from the Maori word rangatahi or youth, TAHI offers live streams and performances from current and up-and-coming musicians in New Zealand. RNZ commissioner for rangatahi, Māori and Pacific Islander content Jodhi Hoani, videographer Rob Burrowes, and Nathaniel Howe are the overall production leads for TAHI. RNZ is also angling the production of new videos and podcasts for TAHI in 2022, with the topics to range from netball to dating and upholding traditions in a modern society.     The platform is also active on social media platforms

2021 ACRA Awards winners named

The Australian Commercial Radio Awards (ACRA) has unveiled its list of honourees for 2020-2021. Melbourne’s 3AW scored nods via, among others, breakfast hosts Ross Stevenson and Russel Howcroft (Best on-air team, Metro AM), Tim Lane (best sports presenter), and Neil Mitchell (best current affairs presenter). Kyle Sandilands and Jackie Henderson’s Kyle and Jackie O show at KIIS 1065 bagged a seventh best on-air team for Metro FM trophy. Jackie Henderson also landed a best entertainment presenter award.  2GB’s outing at the 2021 ACRAs was just as successful. Ben Fordham, in particular, earned his first best talk presenter award as breakfast host, having won five times before on drive. Amie Meehan landed the best news presenter plum for AM. The awards were announced instead of being presented at a formal gathering due to pandemic health protocols.  A full list of awardees is available on the ACRA website.
