The BSAA was established in 1989 to combat the increasing problem of software theft and privacy in Australia. The issue is just as important today, with latest surveys estimating the cost of software privacy to Australian manufacture at $264 million per year. The BSAA is made up of the major computer software manufacturers which account for between 70 and 80 per cent of the PC Software market in Australia. There are also has a number of Associate Members which include Aistralian developers. Software publishers lose billions of dollars a year worldwide to software privacy. That means thousands of lost jobs annually, millions of dollars in lost wages, and lost tax revenue. The BSAA is protecting copyrights and preserving jobs in Australia through education, assistance and litigation.
