HOTA’S 2021 CHRISTMAS COMMISSION UNVEILED

Announcement posted by HOTA 17 Dec 2021

With the festive season in full swing, HOTA, Home of the Arts has unveiled its annual Christmas Commission – Moments – by emerging Gold Coast artist, Nicholas Tossmann.

For the past five years HOTA has activated this annual tradition, designed to celebrate, and support Gold Coast artists by commissioning a seasonal artwork.

In a series of installations, Tossmann’s work Moments combines unassuming language and upscaled text to provoke contemplation as a sequence of festive philosophical flashes that span HOTA Gallery, the wider precinct and Green Bridge.

Tossmann is a recent graduate from the Queensland University of Technology (QUT) and an accomplished young artist whose practice investigates and explores a philosophical search of self and purpose.

Throughout December and January, visitors to the cultural precinct can explore six bold and thoughtful text-based outdoor artworks at various locations across HOTA.

The larger-than-life works commissioned for HOTA are site specific in their placement, and as a multi-part seasonal statement, include Moment, Anticipation, Grateful Being, Categorise Perception, Meaning/Belief and Speculation

Criena Gehrke, HOTA CEO said:

“We are proud to present this incredible new work by Nicholas Tossmann as HOTA’s 2021 Christmas Commission,” she said.

“The work encourages you to slow down, take a stroll across the beautiful parklands, look up and around, as you take in Moments, which we hope will evoke a sense of joy and grounding for all our visitors as they ponder the meaning of the season.”

With a meticulous approach to his work, Tossmann explores his ideas by analysing and pairing words and phrases. Artworks are developed through careful research, making, and critical reflection – Tossmann’s work offers insight into the oscillating sense of purpose, often inviting contemplation and introspection.

Prior to creating HOTA’s 2021 Christmas Commission, Nicholas has recently completed residencies with The Walls and Level Up Coolangatta; and was exhibited in a group show at Metro Arts in West End (as part of the Young Emerging Artists Forum). His first solo exhibition was in October 2021 at Wreckers Artspace, Woolloongabba.

About HOTA’s 2021 Christmas Commission:

The word is out! It’s Christmas Commission time.

The experience of Christmas is different for many people. It can be the exciting anticipation of growing wish lists, moments spent with family and friends and a time to reflect faith and belief.

For the 2021 commission, a new outdoor artwork by Gold Coast artist Nicholas Tossmann has combined unassuming language and upscaled text to invite you to ponder the meaning of Christmas through a thoughtful text-based artwork.

In a series of six installations, Tossmann’s work Moments provokes contemplation as a sequence of festive philosophical flashes that span from the HOTA Gallery across the wider Precinct to the Green Bridge.

HOTA, Home of the Arts, celebrates and supports Gold Coast based artists by commissioning a seasonal artwork in recognition of the role contemporary art practice plays in everyday life.

For the fifth year, HOTA is pleased to present the Christmas Commission 2021 by local artist Nicholas Tossmann.
