Meet the Melbourne Mums Putting Hemp on the Map.

Announcement posted by Hemp Co Australia 11 Aug 2022

With the industrial hemp industry set to almost quadruple this decade, it is no wonder a pair of businesses operated by young Melbourne mothers of two have each been shortlisted as finalists  in the One to Watch category of the annual AusMumpreneur Awards

Date: 8 August 2022

Kate Taylor of Calvi.Co, a bedding brand specialising in 100% hemp bed linen, and Fran Power of Hemp Co Australia, a skincare brand harnessing the power of hemp seed oil, are thrilled to be named finalists in the AusMumpreneur awards, in the tightly contested One to Watch category.

An endless series of Melbourne lockdowns and the impending birth of her second child gave long-time interiors  addict Kate Taylor the push she needed to start her own creative venture. Having recently discovered the beauty,  utility and exceptional sustainability profile of pure hemp bed linen, Kate set out to make it more accessible in  Australia and New Zealand. The (virtual) doors of Calvi.Co were thrown open in August 2021 and the brand  gained swift success. Its small debut collection of sheets, pillowcases and quilt covers in two classic, neutral colours garnered attention from Western Australia (including The Block’s Luke and Jasmin) all the way to New Zealand (including a verified three-time purchaser, who provided the glowing five-star review below).

“We purchased the bundle at a good price and are very happy with the quality and texture  of the hemp linen, these take your bed to another level – we have always used good quality  linen sheets, but these surpass those – they feel luxurious and just so much nicer. We have purchased a second bundle in the other colour available. We are purchasing from NZ as  nothing is available or found here in hemp bed linen. We love them”

While working as a Youth Counsellor and raising her two young children, Fran launched Hemp Co Australia in  August 2021, after 18 months of research and development. With skin related issues and sensitivities becoming more common, and many products containing high levels of toxins, harsh alcohols or chemicals, Fran was looking for her own clean products that would actually work, when she learnt about harnessing the healing power of hemp. The skincare and beard care range consists of all natural, gender neutral products that actually work. Fran’s products have helped others achieve clearer and brighter skin to bring back their confidence, receiving multiple five-star reviews. One customer shared:

“100% the best moisturiser I have ever used. I’ve got combo skin that is very picky with  what moisturiser I use, but this one has been a game changer. Beautiful packaging, the  smell is divine without being overpowering and the ingredients are spot on! You’ve found  a lifetime customer.”

Industrial hemp is experiencing an enormous resurgence as it sheds its taboo reputation and consumers realise its benefits across a wide range of products. In February 2022 a report released by Polaris Market  Research, forecast a huge spike in the value of the global industrial hemp market from USD$4.26 billion in 2021 to USD$16.06 in 2030. The anticipated growth is largely attributed to the growing range of industrial hemp products, like Fran and Kate’s.

The AusMumpreneur Awards are presented by The Women’s Business School to celebrate and recognise Aussie Mums balancing motherhood and business in a way that suits their life and family. Kate and Fran are looking forward to the announcement of the AusMumpreneur winners at this year’s Awards  Gala and wish the other finalists the best of luck.
