The Survivor community has been devastated to learn of the untimely passing of Russell Manser.
Russell was a respected advocate for our community and the fiercest of protectors for our people.
Often society makes the mistake of considering a victim to be merely the sum of their trauma, while simultaneously ignoring the impact and consequences that trauma can have on a life.
Living with significant trauma is a burden that exacts a heavy toll. It can lead to many adverse outcomes and consequences.
These outcomes don't define a person's life, nor does the trauma, that predicated those outcomes.
No person - child or adult, deserves to be the victim of abuse.
However, sometimes an incredible person of character and strength finds a way to take the hardest of experiences and convert that trauma, into a force for genuine good and meaningful change.
Russell did just that.
Russell was a man of profound capacity and resilience. A man of resolve and a man capable of harnessing the most harrowing of experiences and use them to and try make an imperfect world better.
May we all be brave enough to take our experiences, good or bad, stand up in the face of in justice, and have a meaningful impact on the world.
It's what Russell would expect from us and exactly what he showed was possible.
Vale Russell Manser
