With many Australians looking for greener options, Biotuff explores why more households choose biodegradable, compostable products in their homes and how many councils nationwide are jumping on board.
"With climate change being a main focus around the world, it's no surprise many Australians are looking for more eco-friendly products," Nadia Steele from Biotuff says. "Going green has never been easier, but it takes a little understanding from consumers regarding the products they choose for their homes."
Biodegradable, compostable bags and products are the alternative to traditional plastic bags. Compostable resins and bags are manufactured from renewable and sustainable resources and plant-based thermoplastic corn starch containing no GMOs. They are producing strong and reliable alternatives to plastic.
"As the technology behind these plastic alternatives has arisen, they have become much stronger and more reliable," Steele says. "Today, consumers can purchase various products, from resealable sandwich bags, bin liners, plastic wrap, and kitchen gloves."
This change is also hitting our supermarkets, with many industry leaders now providing an eco-friendly and convenient option for their shoppers at the fresh produce section.
"We have all become accustomed to shopping without plastic bags. However, our fruit and vegetables have been left with little choice for consumers to make a sustainable option during their weekly shop," Steele says. "The introduction of compostable fresh produce bags is allowing many consumers, and supermarkets, to reduce their carbon footprint, help global emissions and protect the environment."
The Biotuff biodegradable and compostable products are 100% reusable and compostable. Giving consumers a significant advantage from a sustainability aspect, from packing their fresh produce groceries and filling the kid's lunches to composting their fruit and vegetable waste. Biodegradable and certified Compostable to Australian standards AS4736 and AS5810.
"These products reduce landfill waste and carbon emissions, which is high on the agenda for many Australian households," Steele says. "Biotuff compostable products are an environmentally friendly alternative for sustainability."
TIPS FOR HOMEOWNERS

Check products have the Australian Standard mark for regulations.
Follow the manufactures advice for disposal/composting
Contact your local council or strata and ask about compostable options in your area
Biotuff also recommends consumers get savvy with composting. With so many home and environment benefits, creating a composting routine in Australian homes and offices is undoubtedly the way forward. Whether this is through their local council or choosing to compost at home.
Many councils now offer kerb side options, with around 150 commercial composting facilities nationwide with green organics and garden waste or organic recycling services. Encouraging more councils to offer this service is imperative.
"This trend is only set to continue. Composting is the sustainable way forward, particularly when you consider a typical family can reuse more than 300kg of waste each year by choosing to compost," Steel says. "Many councils are now offering this service with their weekly bin collection, which is a wonderful step in the right direction."
These products are the way of the future and reduce landfill pressure and emissions. With consumers now realising they have reliable and strong options that are also eco-friendly is taking the pressure off consumers while providing a green and sustainable option.
