Why this Aussie man spent $100,000 on a second-hand toaster

Announcement posted by Apps People 17 May 2023

Stuart had no toaster.

Instead, he went on to spend over $100k+ building a mobile app platform called Blezz.

Blezz is a community platform helping people easily give away or pickup unused household items for free that are gathering dust.

"I've donated a few items since the launch a couple of weeks ago and morning I did my first pickup. I adopted this lovely Sunbeam toaster.", said Stuart with a big smile.

An expensive toaster some might say - but the start of a journey to a better planet where people can easily share what they don’t need. People aren't restricted by their suburb like many Facebook groups and its members don't need to keep on trawling the Facebook to find what they need. Instead they can save their searches and be notified when a matching post is made or if someone sees their request.

One of the unique features of Blezz is that only the user's first name is shown on the app, ensuring privacy for all users. Additionally, all messages stay within the app, keeping communication secure. When a user decides who will receive their donation, they can then share their address or pick-up location. What's more, members need to sign up with their mobile number, another layer of security.

Stuart added, "Almost 2 years ago I launched another app, Foody Bag and it has since saved from landfill almost 100,000 food items. Using that app you can buy end of day surplus food from food reatilers for a third of the retail price. During the next years you’ll be seeing me working hard to emulate that success  with Blezz."

Blezz is fun to use and it's gamified. Its members receive virtual badges for achievements, like a badge for being the first person in the suburb to make a donation or a badge when someone has donated 10 items.

Blezz was created by the team at Apps People, who have developed apps for Qube Logistics, Lean Cuisine and many other well-known mobile apps.

Blezz's mission is to make it easier for people to reduce household waste while also benefiting the community. Its belief is that everyone has something to give, and by sharing these items, we can help reduce avoidable rubbish and create a more sustainable future."

Blezz is currently available in Perth and is set to expand to other Australian cities in the next few months. However, there's nothing to stop anyone, anywhere using the app and giving away those unwanted items.
