Kitty Blomfield: Intermittent fasting is dangerous, especially for women

Announcement posted by Invigorate PR 12 Jul 2023

Kitty Blomfield is warning that intermittent fasting is the biggest con ever and more needs to be done to raise awareness of its dangers.

Kitty Blomfield: Why intermittent fasting is the biggest con ever

Intermittent fasting is a style of dieting in which you put yourself on a schedule that shuttles back and forth between periods of eating and periods of not eating. Some people choose alternate day fastings, while others go for daily time restricted fastings.

According to Kitty Blomfield, health and wellness icon, the personality behind the highly successful Kitty’s 7 Day Challenge and the founder of well known wellbeing brand, NuStrength, the whole premise behind intermittent fasting is that after hours without food, the body has no more sugar stores left and starts burning fats.

“By prolonging the period in which you’re not eating, you basically create a calorie deficit resulting in weight loss. It has nothing to do with the specific time of day you are or are not eating,” Blomfield said.

Blomfield’s successful 7 Day Challenge has transformed the bodies and lives of thousands of Aussie women. Aimed at women who’ve tried every weight loss program out there including intermittent fasting, only to fail, Blomfield assures these women that weight loss programs don’t have to be about spending hours at the gym pounding away at the treadmill and then starving for the rest of the time.

Blomfield takes a holistic approach that helps women train less, eat more and still get better results that last. Providing supportive online training, nutritional advice and training exercises, Blomfied’s emphasis on pro-metabolic nutrition focuses on what you eat, not when you eat. You don’t have to eliminate entire food groups and you never have to starve yourself for hours at a time.

Weight loss through waiting?

“Intermittent fasting is essentially a schedule in which you go for periods of not eating when you’re waiting around till you can next eat again. When you shorten the window of time that you are allowed to eat then you create a calorie deficit because you simply have less time to eat,” Blomfield reasoned.

“It’s not a good method of weight loss when you’re waiting around for the time to tick over from 11.59am to 12.01pm just so you can eat something. You can’t go around saying that just because you only ate during the allocated time, that you’ve lost weight and that therefore it’s a successful way of losing weight.   That is one of the most stupid things I have ever heard.

“I understand completely why people get roped into it and fall for the stupid BS,  but what about all the other negative symptoms that you experience when you go without eating for hours and hours on end, or even days?

“How about just spreading those same calories over the course of the day and not starving?   How about actually putting in place a diet that delivers the nutrients your body needs and the energy you require to function so you are not even thinking about food.”

Pitfalls of intermittent fasting

“The most dangerous consequence of intermittent fasting especially for women that have hormonal issues, sleep issues and digestive issues is they are going long periods without eating and forcing their body to run on stress hormones. I’ve found with so many of the women we work with this only exacerbates these issues,” Blomfield said.

“Did you know that intermittent fasting can have other side effects like insomnia, irritability, headaches and nausea? There are so many pitfalls of intermittent fasting.  Most people end up gaining weight because they have starved themselves for so long that they end up eating too much during their  allocated window of eating or just fall off the wagon and binge eat.

“If you simply pack everything that you otherwise would have eaten into a compressed amount of time, you’re not changing your diet at all, you’re just changing your timetable."

Intermittent fasting is dangerous

“Believe me when I say that I’ve spent most of my adult life jumping from one quick fix diet to the next. None of them work and all of them were restrictive. When you’re kept on restrictive programs like intermittent fasting then you’re likely to want to rebel! And then when you do, or you slip up and make a mistake, you’re riddled with guilt. It’s such a horrible way to spend your life,” Blomfield said.

“The biggest problem I have with intermittent fasting for women is that they are often not only fasting but also under-eating which means the body has to make fuel through a process called gluconeogenesis. If we don’t provide the body with enough glucose it has to break itself down (muscle, thymus and skin) to energy. This is not an easy process; it's inflammatory and stressful on the body. Yes you lose some fat but you also lose muscle, it depletes your body of minerals and progesterone, affects your digestion, thyroid function and sex hormone production.

Blomfield adds that women need to be very careful of restrictive diets.

“Our bodies are very complex and require minimum levels of key nutrients.  Restrictive diets that drastically cut calories, eliminate entire macronutrients of food groups that affect us in many ways and impact our hormones as well as our sleep, digestion, mood, energy and libido."
