Barkla to take on Unisys Asia Pacific leadership role

Announcement posted by Unisys 21 Aug 2003

Andrew Barkla has been named Vice President and General Manager, Unisys Asia Pacific
Since joining Unisys in January 2003 as Managing Director, Australia and New Zealand, Barkla has introduced a number of initiatives to strengthen the subsidiarys performance and build on the success achieved locally in 2002. These include introducing the companys global programme to evolve into a partner-led organization, and launching an accelerated leadership development programme for high-potential employees within Australia and New Zealand.
We started our transition to a services led organization six years ago, and that evolution continues. Our skills continue to be deepened by both new appointments especially from the ranks of the consultancy firms, and by the development of our current employees. Todays customer wants its suppliers to commit to delivering business outcomes and we need the right people and skills to make this happen," he said. Our new management disciplines, our new appointments and our employee development programmes will ensure that we continue to deliver these outcomes. Being able to do this, from initial consultation to execution, is something I believe sets Unisys apart from our competitors, said Andrew Barkla.
Unisys has delivered positive results across Asia Pacific for the first half-year despite difficult market conditions and SARS. Major client wins in Korea and China, in the financial services, transportation and commercial market segments, demonstrate that our clients believe we have market-leading services and solutions.
Other wins in the region - BARA in Australia, the New Zealand Inland Revenue Department, and Maybank in Malaysia, for example - also demonstrate that we have the skills required to deliver clear and measurable business outcomes to customers.
Weve maintained the growth we achieved last year. Our aim is to continue to increase the momentum throughout Asia Pacific for the remainder of 2003 and beyond, he added.
Andrew Barkla established an impressive leadership track record prior to joining Unisys. He held senior executive roles with PeopleSoft, initially as chief operating officer responsible for Australia and New Zealand, and subsequently as vice president and general manager, Asia Pacific. At PeopleSoft, Barkla achieved market-share leadership in Australia/New Zealand, increased market share in Asian geographies, and re-positioned PeopleSoft from a product to a solutions-led business. Before PeopleSoft, Andrew spent eight years with System Software Associates (SSA) in roles including director of operations, Greater China; general manager, Canada, and managing director, Australia and New Zealand.
Barkla will continue to be based in Sydney.
The first six months of 2003 has seen Unisys make a number of other senior appointments. These include Dino Gelmetti, Managing Partner CRM Practice Asia-Pacific, who joined Unisys from BearingPoint; Stuart Hartley, Managing Partner Telecommunications & Media Australia-New Zealand, from Cap Gemini/Ernst & Young; Nigel Hinshelwood, Vice President & General Manager Financial Services Asia-Pacific, also from Cap Gemini/Ernst & Young; Rod Gallagher, Managing Partner Commercial Asia-Pacific, from Deloitte Consulting; and Manish Agarwal, Managing Partner Public Sector Asia-Pacific, previously Managing Partner and General Manager for Unisys South Asia.
