Announcement posted by National Baking Industry Association (NBIA) 15 Sep 2023
Over the past four days more than 1500 pies, sausage rolls, and pasties from bakeries, butchers, cafés, and restaurants around Australia have been judged by a panel of qualified and experienced judges. Judging took place at the Southern Hemisphere's leading food industry expo Fine Food Australia at the Sydney International Convention Centre.
Paradise Bakehouse from Innes Park, Queensland received the Best Plain Pie Title, whilst Rolling Pin Pies & Cake from Ocean Grove, Victoria received the Gourmet Pie Title. The Plain Sausage Roll title winner was Jack's Bakery from Halls Head, Western Australia, with the Gourmet Sausage Roll title going to New York Cakes from Miranda, New South Wales. The new Traditional Pastie Title was taken out by Banana Boogie Bakery from Belair, South Australia.
"This year has been the biggest Aussie Pie Comp so far," said competition organiser Dani Lindsay from the Aussie Pie Council. "Well done to all who have entered, we are blown away by the quality of this year's entries and look forward to many more pie comps to come."
The Aussie Pie Comp is the longest-running and largest pie, sausage roll, and pastie competition in Australia. After 34 years of competition, we have developed a strong understanding of what makes a good pie resulting in a genuine unbiased list of winning entries. Our judges are industry professionals with extensive judging experience following a second-to-no and non-biased process. Each entry receives valuable feedback from the judges themselves which means we are genuinely contributing to improving Australian pie, sausage roll, and pastie industry standards.
Our 2023 sponsors include EOI Bakery, Fine Food Australia, Simple Simon Pie Machines, National Baking Industry Association, Complete Display Equipment, Unox, Pork Australia, Well and Good, Heinz, Manildra Group, and Dunbrae Bakery Solutions. Without these businesses, the Official Great Aussie Pie Competition wouldn't be possible. A special thank you goes out to Shaun Pyne from Pyney's Pie Reviews for assisting this year's judges.
