Want to lose weight: Why caffeine is the most overlooked weight loss super food

Around 75 percent of Australian adults drink at least one cup of coffee per day, with 28 percent of them consuming at least three cups daily. Caffeine is, in fact, one of the most accessible superfoods and yet most people don't realise its full potential and why it can help unlock and fast-track weight loss.

According to Kitty Blomfield, health and wellness icon, the personality behind the highly successful Kitty's 7 Day Challenge and the founder of well-known wellbeing brand, NuStrength, coffee contains many enhancing and beneficial properties to the metabolism and thyroid; all of which help the body to lose weight. In addition, it has been proven that coffee drinkers are just overall happier people!

How does coffee help the body

"Coffee contains important minerals and vitamins such as Potassium, Magnesium, B1 and B3, all of which are essential for cellular energy in the body. Without adequate amounts of these, your thyroid suffers and your body feels tired and flat," Blomfield said.

"When trying to lose weight, the first thing you need to do is support your body to feel more energised and to equip your body with access to the energy it needs to move and burn the calories. Coffee provides this in spades."

Caffeine supports liver function

"Caffeine assists in liver function by protecting it from damaging substances such as alcohol, as well as lowering liver enzymes in the body. Too many liver enzymes can be toxic and damaging," Blomfield said.

"According to Kate Deering, author of 'How to Heal Your Metabolism', current research shows that coffee drinkers have a 40 percent less chance of getting hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), the most common type of liver cancer.

"The liver does its work while we sleep helping to cleanse the body and remove toxins. This is essential when we are embarking on a journey of weight loss as we want to break down fat and remove it from the body."

Caffeine aids in digestion and relieves constipation

"Caffeine is a super food in more ways than we realise. It supports digestion by stimulating the production of gastric acid in the stomach which helps to break down food more easily and improve digestion," Blomfield said.

"Along with increasing energy, caffeine may trigger contractions in your colon and intestinal muscles. This can lead to an easier bowel movement. To lose weight, you need to increase your energy levels  and feel lighter and more mobile. The last thing you need to deal with is a sluggish gut. Coffee helps to get everything moving and to keep you regular which supports overall improved health and wellness."

Caffeine stimulates the metabolism

"What most people don't know is that caffeine enhances the use of glycogen (fuel) in the body which means it is metabolically stimulating," Blomfield said.

"For this reason, you must make sure you are well fuelled when drinking coffee and never have black coffee on an empty stomach. Always have it with food and or milk/ cream and sugar. Coffee lowers blood sugar which in turn increases adrenaline and creates a stress response in the body. This is why you can feel anxious or get the jitters after drinking coffee.

"In a nutshell, coffee is awesome and can stimulate your metabolism and improve thyroid function when combined with the right foods and plenty of energy. So drink it if you enjoy it, just do it safely."

Blomfield added that caffeine is a key part of her weight loss coaching program and she and her team help clients to understand how to incorporate caffeine in to their diet to accelerate weight loss.

"Increasing your caffeine consumption is not just about drinking more cups of coffee. It needs to be done strategically in a way that maximises the impact on the body in a safe and sustainable way."
