AUSTRALIAN INDUSTRY LOOKS TO INTEL ITANIUM 2-BASED SYSTEMS AS NEXT GENERATION PROCESSOR ARCHITECTURE
Announcement posted by Intel 19 Dec 2003
Australian system integrators, software developers and hardware suppliers such as e-Wise Solutions, Expert Information Services, Ipex Information Technology Group and Object Consulting are moving to develop systems and applications around Intel Itanium 2-based systems to meet customer demand for premium enterprise server applications.
Local customer demand for Intel's Itanium 2-based systems is gaining momentum as organisations recognise the need for industry-leading performance, price-performance and flexibility for large-scale enterprise applications.
Leighton Phillips, Manager Solution and Strategy Group, Intel Australia said, "The mix of customers buying Intel Itanium 2-based systems has evolved from high-performance/scientific users to enterprise customers who realise Itanium 2-based systems have set a new precedent for world-class performance in enterprise server applications."
Peter Steggels, Analyst at IDEAS International said, "Itanium builds on Intel's existing strong position in providing competitive enterprise solutions that offer a wide range of platform and operating system choices and promote flexibility, performance and scalability. Cost control and TCO reduction is an incredibly important part of every CIO's responsibility today and the Intel Itanium 2-based system is an opportunity to reduce TCO and overall IT costs by controlling long-term server costs," he said.
e-Wise Solutions Jon Sheiman, Partner, e-Wise Solutions said, "e-Wise Solutions (FOCUS) mobilises workflows and business processes through the automation and integration of paper based tasks into an intelligent business based workflow. As a result, a large proportion of new transactions are generated that require processing and e-Wise Solutions sees Itanium 2-based systems as a major benefit to the overall solution due to its ability to address high transaction workloads.
"FOCUS, being an n-tier architected solution, will benefit from Itanium 2-based systems not only at the database layer but also at the application layer. e-Wise Solutions takes advantage of the industry standard building block architectures from Intel to mitigate risks around interoperability in future product development efforts. We have confidence in recommending to customers a complete end to end solution on Intel architecture products," he added.
Expert Information Services Ivan Gomez, VP International Business Development and Strategic Alliances of Expert IS said, "Expert IS has been testing the Intel Itanium 2-based systems for large database consolidation. Tests performed for one customer showed that Intel's Itanium 2-based 4-processor server outperformed a PIII Xeon 8-processor server. This provides a convincing argument for customers to reduce the TCO of the solution not only through a reduction in infrastructure complexity but also through a direct reduction in database licensing costs as less CPUs are needed to meet the current performance requirements."
Ipex Information Technology Group "The Intel Itanium 2-based system, in combination with Windows 2003 64-bit software, provides a unique opportunity to deliver substantial step-function, improved performance and reliability as well as a reduction in the need for mid-range legacy systems, while also retaining current investments in expertise and intellectual property," said Yaron Schwalb, Technical Director, Ipex Information Technology Group.
According to Schwalb, to assist organisations in evaluating this new platform, Ipex has developed a roaming lab program that gives Australian organisations the option to evaluate on-site a 4-Way/Windows 64bit/SQL Itanium2-based system that leverages the expertise of the hardware and software development teams.
Object Consulting Les Bognar, Director Business Development, Object Consulting said, "Object Consulting has been working with Intel to demonstrate the viability of rationalising enterprise systems with Intel's Itanium 2-based server architecture. Object Consulting has undertaken a number of 'Proof of Concepts' to validate the performance of Itanium 2-based server technology prior to recommending deployment of enterprise scale applications. These analyses demonstrate that Intel's Itanium 2-based 4-processor server running Linux offers a cost effective and robust package for all categories of enterprise application tasks tested. This, together with the price-performance and choice of OEMs offering systems, creates a compelling reason to commoditise and remove the complexity from enterprise systems' infrastructure."
These OEM and ISV perspectives demonstrate the business value of Itanium 2 processor-based platforms. They are configured for demanding enterprise and technical applications and enable organisations to maximise their return on investment by delivering industry leading performance at a lower cost and with greater choice than proprietary RISC technologies.
Intel Itanium 2-based systems are supported by a rich ecosystem of highly scalable, open-standard 64-bit solutions from over 40 leading hardware vendors, more than five operating systems including Windows* Server 2003, HP-UX and Linux, and hundreds of applications and tools.
In the past year the number of applications and tools optimised for the Itanium Processor Family has quadrupled, including optimised database solutions from IBM, Microsoft and Oracle, and major enterprise applications from BEA, SAP, CA, Reuters and SAS.
