Seven years after she went viral all over the world for her age-defying looks, Carolyn Hartz of SweetLife Australia is back in the spotlight at a staggering 76 years old, still pushing the envelope and stunning audiences with bikini shoots that leave no uncertainty about the tremendous benefits of abstaining from processed sugar in the long term.
According to Hartz, it was the risk of Type 2 Diabetes some 30 years ago that prompted her journey to find the best sugar alternative overseas and to be the first to bring it to Australia after she started her company SweetLife Australia.
"I've always advocated for finding an alternative rather than completely abstaining from a type of food many crave, such as sweets, because deprivation never works," says Carolyn. "You end up craving it all the more, and your efforts more often than not are upended within a few months."
She credits her Sugar Free Baking cookbook recipes and Sugar Free Kitchen range of mixes - including her favourite cookies, lamingtons and chocolate mousse all sweetened with naturally occurring xylitol and monk fruit sweetener - with enabling her to enjoy sweet treats without the harm and the ups and downs of a 'sugar high'.
Xylitol is extracted from plants such as birch tree and the woody fibre of corn cobs, so it's 100% naturally occurring. It is also produced naturally in our bodies. Monk fruit is an all-natural sugar free sweetener derived from a small green fruit that resembles a melon and has been enjoyed in Asia for centuries.
