Australias largest travel agency replaces its servers and legacy systems with Intel Architecture and Windows 2000
Traveland, one of Australias largest travel agencies, has left behind its legacy Unix-based systems and selected Intel Architecture-based servers as the foundation for a total redevelopment of its high-volume computing environment.

Growing from 170 offices in 1998 to 415 offices in 2000, and having to manage approximately 7.5 million product transactions per day, Traveland was pushing the capabilities of its aging transactional computing environment, challenging the company to meet the new demands of e-Business and the integration of the Internet as a primary channel for customer communications.

After comparing its existing Sun* and other legacy servers with Microsoft* Windows* 2000, Traveland concluded that Windows 2000, running on Intel Architecture, was the best platform to support its anticipated rapid growth for the next decade or more.

Traveland has grown rapidly in the last three years. While we have been early adopters of technology, our infrastructure hasnt kept up with the growth weve had lately, says Priyanka Paranagama, Chief Information Officer, Traveland.

We needed to build a seamless, multi-channel business that includes a single view of the customer, and made a conscious decision to go into Microsoft software and Intel Architecture-based servers. Part of their appeal is eliminating the need to maintain multiple platforms. We rigorously tested them until we were confident they were going to provide the availability and resources for the many applications we will roll out in the future.

Traveland will soon begin a 12-month rollout involving Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server, Microsoft SQL Server and OLAP Services, Systems Union* Sun Financials, point-of-sale terminals, and more. Centralising data will improve upon previous batch-oriented transaction processing by offering real-time views of company data, while Citrix* MetaFrame* will provide access to central databases from 600 desktop PCs at more than 100 Traveland owned retail outlets.

The new environment will not only support the more than $1 billion in transactional revenue that Traveland will earn this year, but will also give it the flexibility to build and scale its Internet presence to dramatically enhance customer service.

At the heart of Travelands new environment are Intel Architecture-based servers including 14 single, quad and eight-way Intel Xeon-based Compaq servers for database and Web serving. Travelands Citrix MetaFrame server farm is based on 15 dual and four-way Intel Xeon servers.

According to David Bolt, general manager, Intel Australia, Traveland recognises the unique combination of flexibility, stability and scalability that the Intel Architecture and Microsoft Windows 2000 provides. With the support of every major software and hardware vendor, Intel Architecture is increasingly being recognised as a more effective alternative to legacy Unix platforms. It delivers high performance for low cost and offers a long-term roadmap for growth. Travelands choice will ensure it remains at the forefront of Australias travel industry for years to come,
