Once summer rolls round, every well intending Aussie, with renewed motivation to lose weight comes to the same conclusion: got to exercise more, start my summer diet and lose weight. So they sign up at the gym the moment a promotion comes along and start a strict diet. The number one thing on their hit list: sugar. Got to cut out the sugar, they all say. No more Tim Tams and donuts, no more tiramisu after dinner.
"Stop demonising sugar!" NuStrength founder, Kitty Blomfield emphasised.
Kitty Blomfield is a respected health and wellness icon, the personality behind the highly successful Kitty's 7 Day Challenge and the founder of the well-known wellbeing brand, NuStrength.
"Cutting out sugar and carbs is a quick fix solution that might work in the short term but as you hop from one quick fix to the next, you soon realise that nothing seems to work and you just can't shift those kilos from your belly and thighs. This is because sugar is essential for long-term sustainable weight loss," Blomfield explained.
Blomfield's company, NuStrength, has changed the mindsets, lifestyles and bodies of thousands of Aussie women who used to be terrified of stepping on the scales. Through Blomfield's mix of supportive coaching, targeted exercise and nutrient-dense meals, NuStrength's holistic nutrition, education and exercise program has helped thousands of women ditch diets permanently with long-term sustained success.
Understanding the function of sugar in your body
"Did you know that the cells in your body prefer sugar to any other source of energy? Sugar, also known as glucose, is required for the proper functioning of your thyroid, liver, brain and kidneys. Your body makes energy most efficiently when it's using glucose, producing the most amount of energy and oxygen," Blomfield said.
"When you provide your body with a steady stream of glucose, you're balancing your blood sugars well. Without enough glucose circulating in your system, you'll start to feel dizzy and lightheaded and you'll eventually pass out.
"That's how important glucose is to your body and it's vital that we all understand this and recognise the importance of sugars and glucose in our food intake."
Sugar is a superior fuel source
"Your body can make energy from fat and protein but these are inferior fuel sources. Your body is clever and has built-in mechanisms to rely on if it's not getting enough sugar," Blomfield said.
"But just like using a generator as a backup, it's never a good idea to solely rely on the generator day in and day out. The fats and proteins in your body serve as a backup fuel source when blood sugar levels run low. If you hold back the sugar, you will end up craving it and bingeing. It is important to provide the body with the balance of nutrients and energy that it needs, especially when you are trying to lose weight."
Without fuel your body eats itself
"Whenever the body is using its own tissues to work, we're surviving, not thriving. Low-carb diets work because you're cutting an entire macro-nutrient from your food intake, resulting in a large calorie deficit," Blomfield said.
"When you cut out carbs and sugar, initially you'll notice a difference as your body switches to using fat to fuel its functioning. But after a few weeks or months, you'll start to hit a really low point and have massive sugar cravings and that's not even to mention disrupted sleep, mood swings and low energy.
"If you do this for long enough, your metabolism adapts and slows down and without you knowing, your body is actually surviving in a state of stress. Your hair will start falling out, your bones will start to become more fragile and your organs will suffer. Deprivation of key fuel sources causes long-term damage to your health."
Balance and moderation
"If you've been hopping from one diet to the next for your whole life, like most people have, your metabolic rate simply diminishes over time. This is why I get so frustrated when people constantly tell me all about how they've cut sugar out but they're still not getting the results they want, all the while diagnosing themselves with a so-called sugar addiction," Blomfield said.
Nutrient-dense sugars are critical
"It's become a bit of a mission in life to tell women that sugar isn't the issue. It's how it's delivered. It's all about including more nutrient-dense sugars in your diet; things like fresh fruits, orange juice, honey, root veggies and maple syrup. I recommend eating homemade ice cream every night before you go to bed. It provides your body with the fuel it needs to sleep through," Blomfield said.
"Don't demonise sugar and carbs: instead, strive to lose weight sustainably through a small calorie deficit. This is how you'll be able to stick to a nutrition plan without losing motivation. And most importantly, the loop of binge-eating and guilt stops."
Ignore bad influencers
"If you want to get ready for summer, it's time to make some long-lasting changes and the first step is through understanding, information and education. There's a lot of misinformation out there and tonnes of featherlight teenage social media influencers cutting themselves sweet deals with diet companies to promote something or other, without coming down to the fundamental information and education that should form the basis of your diet and fitness program," Blomfield said.
"Don't get sucked in by their empty promises. Find out for yourself, through informative channels, how fad diets don't work and get onto a holistic program that encompasses everything you need to deliver great results that last a lifetime."
