Intel and Sensis launch wireless hotspot on Whereis and CitySearch websites

Announcement posted by Intel 07 Nov 2003

Over 200 public hotspots listed
Intel, together with Sensis has launched an online hotspot locator tool that will help laptop users find public wireless internet connections, or hotspots.

Australia's favourite maps and directions site1, www.whereis.com, will host the hotspot locator, and Australia's leading culture and lifestyle site2, www.CitySearch.com.au, will provide accompanying educational and promotional material. Both sites are managed by Sensis.

Demand for wireless access via hotspots is increasing rapidly with Frost & Sullivan, a leading growth consulting company predicting wireless hotspot users in Australia will reach 2.068 million by 20083.

Anyone can use the locator tool, at www.whereis.com, to pinpoint public wireless internet connections, or hotspots, provided by wireless internet service providers in more than 200 locations in cafes, hotels, airports and other diverse locations around Australia. The locator tool will be updated regularly as new hotspots are created.

To use the service, simply enter a location into a search function on the Whereis* site and a map identifying any hotspots in that vicinity will be
displayed. In keeping with the marketing of Intel's Centrino(tm) Mobile Technology, the hotspots will be represented by Magenta coloured dots. The mapping technology is provided by the Whereis* site and is similar to an existing service that shows the nearest car parks.

The hotspot locator will be promoted across the CitySearch* and Whereis* websites and can be found at www.whereis.com. Further information on connecting to wireless hotspots will be provided on a purpose built Intel Centrino mobile technology education page.

Abigail Samuels, Intel's consumer marketing manager, said: "The hotspot locator is an added convenience for people wanting to work wirelessly and it links to educational information on how to get the full benefits of mobility via public hotspots.

"Using Intel Centrino mobile technology enabled laptops, users can surf the net, access email and catch up on work at any of the public hotspots listed on the service. Intel is taking an active role in bringing wireless computing to users everywhere by investing in companies developing Wi-Fi4 technology and supporting the growth of wireless hotspot locations," she added.

Andrew Day, Sensis Chief Executive Officer, said: "We aim to provide our customers with innovative ways to promote their businesses across diverse channels and Sensis' vast range of online services allows us to deliver an integrated online solution.

"In this instance our online media sales division, Sensis MediaSmart is managing the program; online city guide CitySearch* will host educational material on connecting to hotspots and users will be able to pinpoint hotspots using mapping technology provided by the Whereis* site," Mr Day added.

Intel Centrino mobile technology includes a new mobile processor, related chipsets and 802.11 wireless network capabilities that have been designed and tested to work together. In addition to wireless network capability, the technology enables extended battery life, thinner and lighter notebook PC designs and outstanding mobile performance.
