The Surprising Benefits of Pilates Classes (for all ages!)

Announcement posted by Rejuven8 Health & Fitness Clinic 03 Nov 2023

Pilates classes are not new, but the latest research does reveal new health benefits for those who undertake them.

Rejuven8 Health and Fitness Clinic's Barb Howard explains.

"Pilates can be beneficial in guarding against several common health issues, especially when practiced regularly and correctly. Some of the health concerns that Pilates classes can help guard against include; back pain, osteoporosis, muscle imbalances, joint stiffness and arthritis and more"

With a Masters in Science qualification, Barb goes on to explain the benefits of Pilates classes in addressing and improving these ailments are backed by science.

Many of the benefits are particularly beneficial for females in middle age.

"A study published in the Journal of Bodywork and Movement Therapies in 2013 found that participants who practiced Pilates for 12 weeks experienced significant improvements in flexibility compared to the control group. Not only that a research article published in the Journal of Sports Science & Medicine in 2011 showed that Pilates training effectively increased core strength and stability in middle-aged women after a 12-week intervention."

In addition the following benefits of pilates have been studied and confirmed via research:

Posture Enhancement: A study in the Journal of Physical Therapy Science in 2015 demonstrated that Pilates exercises improved the posture of middle-aged women, contributing to a reduction in back pain and an improvement in overall spinal alignment.

Joint Health: A systematic review published in the Journal of Fitness Research in 2016 highlighted the positive effects of Pilates exercises on joint health, particularly in individuals with arthritis and other joint-related issues.

Bone Health: A study published in the Journal of Back and Musculoskeletal Rehabilitation in 2014 suggested that Pilates exercises could be beneficial for improving bone mineral density in postmenopausal women, potentially contributing to better bone health.
