Intel executives outlined strategies for next generation computing networks and platforms

Announcement posted by Intel 27 Apr 2001

During their keynotes at the Intel Developer Forum (IDF) on April 26, Intel executives outlined the companys strategies to enable richer applications and services for next-generation computing networks and platforms that expand the power of the Internet.

Looking Ahead: Intel and the Future of Computing
Pat Gelsinger, vice president and chief technology officer of the Intel Architecture Group, showed Intels commitment in designing for the future US$4.3 billion in R&D, US$7.5 billion in capital spending, and world-class technology innovation from Intel Labs. Research directions and innovations will focus on four areas: silicon and manufacturing, compelling platform architecture, communications, and new Internet capabilities. The efforts made in these areas will help fuel the future of computing.
For silicon and manufacturing, Gelsinger outlined the criteria and evolving technologies that will make Moores law work through 2010. For compelling platform
architecture, Gelsinger highlighted Intels concept PC efforts, next-generation I/O architecture, and advances in compiler technology.
Intel Labs are working to define the future of the PC platform. This work includes innovative system packaging, power, and thermal solutions as well as promoting initiatives such as Ease of Use, Legacy Reduction and Instantly Available PC.

Intel Architecture 2001 and Beyond
Louis Burns, vice president and general manager of Intels Desktop Platform Group explained the reasons for desktop platforms to become center of the digital revolution. As MP3 players, digital cameras, digital camcorders, Internet talk and instant messaging all being predicted to enjoy explosive growth in the next three years, PC shipment is estimated to growth from 702 Million in 2001 to 1.27 Billion in 2004*.
The Pentium 4 processor is destined to become the center of the digital world, said Burns. Whether encoding video and MP3 files, doing financial analysis, or experiencing the latest Internet technologies -- the Pentium 4 processor is designed to meet the needs of all users.
The industry support for the newly launched Pentium 4 processor 1.7GHz is strong in China, Founder, GreatWall, Legend, Start, TCL, and TongFang all committed to introduce PC based on the new processor.
Burns also stated that Intel is poised to ramp Pentium 4 processor platform very aggressively and works with software industry to deliver optimized applications to take advantage of the new processors performance.

Enterprise Architecture 2001
Intels presence in enterprise computing environments continues to grow. Dave Cowan, vice president and general manager of Intels Enterprise Chipset Division in the Enterprise Platforms Group described how three important enterprise architectures would influence the computing landscape in 2001.

With server segmentation increasing, storage disaggregating and Internet driving
scale out and up, it implicates that enterprise architecture needs solutions in more interoperability, better I/O scalability as well as system affordability and scalability.

Itanium processor-based systems are nearing platform release and will bring significant benefits to businesses of all sizes. And, Foster is the next processor in the IA-32 server family and is the first based on the NetBurstTM microarchitecture. Intel will continue to deliver building blocks for a full range of platforms, from high density, front-end systems all the way to large back-end mainframe-class computers, Cowan said.
Intel is the leader in the development of InfiniBand Architecture products. The companys effort brings higher reliability and performance to server I/O, increasing the capabilities of Intel-based servers.
