Bronte Pictures launches nationwide casting search for WWII action thriller Beast Of War

Announcement posted by Jameson & Co 22 Nov 2023

A national talent search is underway to cast the new Bronte Pictures feature, Kiah Roache-Turner's Beast Of War.

Headed by award-winning casting director Amanda Mitchell, Mitchell Casting are now seeking Australia's most talented new and established actors to play World War II soldiers who are trying to survive in the open ocean, clinging onto the debris of their sunken warship … while being menaced by a great white shark on a vengeful mission.

Whilst there are a number of support roles to cover, Amanda is focusing on two key roles besides the lead which is currently on offer. One is a scripted 17 year-old unexpected hero, the other an alpha-male with a chip on his shoulder hiding from a traumatic past.

A co-production between Bronte Pictures (The Fabulous Four, Streamline, Wyrmwood: Apocalypse, Escape and Evasion) and Pictures in Paradise's Chris Brown (Sting, Daybreakers, The Railway Man). The project launched at last month's AFM and generated a great deal of buzz, making the exclusive Hollywood Reporters Hot List and cementing itself as one of the most hotly anticipated Australian films scheduled for 2024. At this year's market, trade publications jumped on the announcement by sales and distribution company, Cornerstone Films that the antagonistic shark will be created in Australia by Creature NFX's director Paul Trefry. Trefry's credits include Alien: Covenant and Unbroken and is known for his work with the likes of James Cameron, Ridley Scott and Baz Luhrmann.

Says Northfield, "It's very exciting to be looking Australia wide for these roles and we're all absolutely thrilled to have Amanda on board.

"Kiah has written an exceptional script and Chris and I are very much looking forward to the next few months."

Filming will commence on Beast Of War in mid-2024, with production taking place in Byron Bay and Malta.

Roache-Turner is one of Australia's most revered genre directors. His debut film Wyrmwood: Road of the Dead premiered at Fantastic Fest in Austin and his follow-up feature Nekrotonic, starring Monica Bellucci, premiered at the 2018 Toronto International Film Festival. His next film, Wyrmwood: Apocalypse won the Audience Award at the 2021 Sydney Film Festival and his current feature, an arachnophobia horror titled Sting will be released by Studiocanal in the U.K., Australia, New Zealand, France, Germany, Switzerland and Benelux.
