iPlanet Offers Industry's First Wireless-Enabled And Multi-Hosted Bill Payment Solutions

Announcement posted by iPlanet E-Commerce Solutions 09 Aug 2001

* Enables banks, enterprises and service providers to streamline billing process by allowing customers to view and pay their bills via cell phones or other wireless devices
* Enables service providers and banks to offer hosted bill payment service
iPlanet E-Commerce Solutions, a Sun-Netscape Alliance, today announced two new products in its Internet Bill Presentment and Payment (IBPP) portfolio. For the business to consumer (B2C) market, iPlanet introduced iPlanet BillerXpert version 4.5, the industry's first wireless-enabled billing solution, enabling banks, enterprises and service providers to streamline the billing process by allowing customers to view and pay their bills via cell phones or other wireless devices. For the business to business (B2B) market, iPlanet offers iPlanet BillerXpert B2B Edition (v.4.5), the
industry's first multi-hosted B2B billing solution and a cost-effective alternative to in house billing.

The iPlanet billing products are part of the iPlanet commerce services product line, including solutions for buying, selling, enabling marketplaces and trade facilitation. All of the iPlanet commerce applications are built on the highly scalable and reliable iPlanet infrastructure platform, including the Java technology-based iPlanet* Application Server. The commerce products are also key components of the Sun(tm) Open Net Environment (Sun(tm) ONE) vision of a complete open architecture for the creation, assembly and deployment of smart Web services.

iPlanet BillerXpert 4.5 Software
In response to the growing demand for wireless bill payment solutions, particularly in markets where cellular penetration is at an all-time high, such as Europe and Asia, iPlanet has WAP (Wireless Access Protocol)-enabled the iPlanet BillerXpert product. Customers have indicated a need to expand their bill distribution capabilities to match the online connection practices of their customers, who often use their phones and handheld computers more than their desktop computers. Billed customers will be able to see their bill information immediately, including a summary of how much
they owe, when the bill is due, and whether the payment has been processed.

iPlanet BillerXpert B2B Edition Software
In addition to convenience for their customers, billers and service providers need a bill payment solution that delivers operational efficiencies. With multi-hosting functionality, the iPlanet BillerXpert, B2B Edition product now enables service providers and banks to offer hosted bill payment services targeted at market segments where it does not make economic sense to build the online billing infrastructure in house. For example, service providers may target small to medium sized companies, while banks may target corporate customers, charging for the initial set up as well as monthly or transaction fees and potentially saving those companies thousands of dollars by outsourcing the billing service rather than using in-house resources. Large international companies are not only able to streamline the billing process for their customers but also have access to the more desirable cash management business.

The iPlanet BillerXpert B2B Edition application will add integration with iPlanet Trustbase(tm) Transaction Manager software. This enables banks to offer EIPP services using identity information from the Identrus system. This provides authentication of transaction participants and dispute resolution facilities, which in turn enables banks to more easily manage the risk of Internet service delivery because they are using a trusted identity system.

QSI Payments
In addition, iPlanet and QSI Payments have agreed to extend payment functionality to iPlanet BillerXpert application customers in the Asia Pacific region. QSI Payments has developed an interoperability interface that iPlanet will jointly market, which provides support of payment systems and payment clearing in the Asia Pacific region.

The interoperability interface is based on OFX standards and includes support for both the product on the biller's site and through a service provider. The agreement continues the global extension of iPlanet BillerXpert, creating a more complete solution for online billing customers involved in global transactions.

"The relationship between iPlanet and QSI Payments allows customers using iPlanet BillerXpert software access to the existing QSI Payments network of regional banking connections," said John Richards, CEO & Chairman of QSI Payments. "QSI Payments is excited to be providing e-payments infrastructure software and secure payments solutions to such professionals as iPlanet who have experience and extensive knowledge of the IBPP industry."
