It may only be December but it's not too early to start planning for 2024. Afterall, organisation is the key to success, as the saying goes.
According to Dr Vincent, a well-respected health and wellness expert, food scientist, clinical nutritionist and founder of Renovatio, this January, when we're all evaluating the happenings of 2023, and striving to turn over a new leaf in the new year, one of the best things you can do health-wise is to add the intake of apple cider vinegar to your daily habits.
"When people make new year's resolutions, they tend to be really vague, which doesn't set you up for success. For example, a common new year's resolution is to lose weight, but people don't get into the specifics like how much they want to lose, how they're going to do it, and what the time frame is like," he pointed out.
"Most people also say that they want to eat better in the new year. But how? One solid action you can put into place is to take a bit of apple cider vinegar every day," he suggested.
"As far as I am concerned, apple cider vinegar is a super food and something which can not only support your overall health and wellbeing, it can also assist you to reach lofty weight loss goals, simply by adding some of it to your diet every day."
The focus of Renovatio Bioscience is on the nutritional power of the humble apple. As one of Australia's foremost and trusted researchers on the power of antioxidants in diet and nutrition, Dr Vincent, food scientist at the University of Newcastle, has been researching how to extract powerful antioxidants called phenolics from apples, activate them through groundbreaking processes involving water and then translating them into world leading supplements, skin care and foods which support health and wellness. As an expert on the benefits of apples, Dr Vincent shared some insights into the benefits of apple cider vinegar.
Six benefits of apple cider vinegar
Acetic acid benefits
"Apple cider vinegar is made by fermenting the sugar from apples. This turns the sugars into acetic acid, which is the main ingredient in apple cider vinegar and is responsible for the multitude of health benefits that we can enjoy. Acetic acid has been shown to reduce blood pressure and blood sugar levels, decrease inflammation and support weight loss," Dr Vincent said.
Apple cider vinegar can kill pathogens
"The acetic acid in apple cider vinegar has antibacterial properties and can kill pathogens which are organisms that cause disease in the body," Dr Vincent said.
"In our bodies, pathogens can comprise viruses and bacteria. In particular, one test tube study showed that apple cider vinegar was effective at killing Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus, which is the bacteria responsible for staph infections.
"Similarly, apple cider vinegar can help remove chemical residue and kill bacteria present in food, so you can use it to clean your fruits and vegetables like salad leaves before consuming them. Just add a few tablespoons of apple cider vinegar to the water and soak the fruits and veggies for a couple of minutes," he said.
Helping with type 2 diabetes
"People with type 2 diabetes may want to consume some apple cider vinegar daily as it has been linked to improving insulin sensitivity and helping to lower blood sugar level responses after meals. For years this has been used as a home remedy because it helps reduce blood sugar levels. Aside from that, apple cider vinegar is commonly used to treat heartburn," he said.
"However, the best way to manage type 2 diabetes is by following advice from your health practitioner, eating a balanced diet that is low in refined carbs and sugars," he advised.
Weight loss
"Weight loss ties in well with new year's resolutions. Weight loss, better eating and drinking less alcohol are all consistently amongst the top most common new year's resolutions," Dr Vincent revealed.
"Studies have shown that apple cider vinegar can assist in weight loss. Apple cider vinegar is said to increase the feeling of being full which can in turn lead to eating less and thus consuming fewer calories. The feeling of appetite suppression can last as long as two hours after a meal. Those who participated in the trials also reported snacking less for up to 24 hours," he continued.
Benefits to heart health
"Impressed by the effectiveness of apple cider vinegar? There's even more! Apple cider vinegar has been linked to the improvement of heart health too. Heart disease is one of the leading health problems in Australia. From 2020 to 2021, over 571,000 Aussies aged 18 and up were diagnosed with coronary heart disease. Recent studies showed that apple cider vinegar may have a benefit on total cholesterol levels and can lower blood pressure," Dr Vincent said.
Better skin health
"The last benefit of apple cider vinegar we'll be talking about today is skin health! Apple cider vinegar is a common remedy for everyday skin conditions like dry skin and eczema. By adding a bit of apple cider vinegar to bath water, you can help restore some your skin's acidity levels. You will have to test it out though because it's not suitable for all skin problems. For eczema flare ups, you could try adding apple cider vinegar to a wet wrap made from gauze or some clean cotton fabric," he said.
Daily dosage of apple cider vinegar
"There are many benefits of apple cider vinegar. The easiest way to do it is to simply mix it into a glass of water and drink it in the morning. I recommend Activated apple cider vinegar so you can benefit from the additional potent antioxidants," he said.
"You can add up to two teaspoons of apple cider vinegar, which will hit the dosage recommendations of 15-30ml. However, if you are new to apple cider vinegar, then I suggest starting with a small amount until you are more used to it. It does have a unique tart taste.
"With so many health benefits, adding a couple of tablespoonfuls of apple cider vinegar to a cup of water each day is an easy habit that you can work into your daily routine that can bring a whole host of health benefits to you. As you welcome in the new year, may you look forward to a year of better health!"
