Pantone's colour of the year for 2024 has just been announced and the verdict is in. The colour that will be dominating the interior design and decoration trends this year will be peach fuzz. A summery mixture of orange, yellow, white and blush pink, this warm hue, whether soft and muted or bright and intense, signifies vitality, energy and playfulness, while looking sweet and cosy.
According to Kellie Richardson, leading interior designer, media commentator and founder of highly successful firm, Kurved by Design, peach fuzz will feature prominently throughout the year across furniture, soft furnishings, interior design, clothing, and more.
Richardson is respected across industry and the real estate sector as one of the leading experts on all matters interior design and property staging. Agents rely on Richardson and her team to style properties to optimise sale prices. Her business includes five divisions including interior design, property styling, maintenance, homewares and her latest venture, the Kurved by Design Interior Designer academy. The academy is the first of its kind in Australia providing interior design courses online. She is famous for her tag line: Botox for your home.
Top trend for 2024: peach fuzz
"Peach is the sort of colour that's often overlooked by designers so I'm really looking forward to working this beautiful colour into Aussie homes this year. Despite invoking gentleness, peach is a sophisticated colour with depth that hints at a new contemporariness," Richardson said.
Richardson's passion for design is evident through her home interior projects. She draws inspiration from all aspects of life, from global trends, to real life stories and experiences, to the innovation of art and fashion and the beauty of nature.
"Peach fuzz can be used effectively and aesthetically and pairs well with white, black and navy. You can add brightness to a dark room, warm up a more neutral room with this colour, or add an intense pop of colour with some fun accessories - textiles immediately come to mind," She said.
"Other ways to add peach fuzz to your home? I actually think a lot of kids would love this colour in their bedrooms and playrooms. It's such a fun, candy-coloured, summery shade that it would go well with the playful nature of children."
Warmer textures
"In 2024, we'll be ushering out our long-held obsession with the cold whites and greys. We're moving towards warmer tones and a more inviting feeling. We'll be seeing more warm, textural spaces and we'll be using more natural materials to bring a natural and warm look to our homes," Richardson added.
" I think minimalism has evolved and it's heading away from some of the starkness and frigidity, in favour of a organic, hospitable feeling. We are going to start seeing more warmth and content in homes this year that fill the heart with memories, intrigue and comfort."
Quiet luxury
"In line with wanting warmer textures in 2024, we'll be shifting away from smooth, clean, sterile looks and bring in a cosier look. I like to think of it as quiet luxury. It's a look that is both beautiful but lived in. We'll be personalising our spaces with antiques and heirlooms that have been passed down from generation to generation, alongside our usual, functional day to day pieces," Richardson continued.'
"Along with this, we'll also be turning our backs on the modern tech look that's been trending for so long. Don't get me wrong, the era of smart technology is here to stay - nobody can go back to a life without wifi and Netflix! However, our screens won't be a focal point. Rather, we'll be softening the tech look with a more natural feel, and windows with curtains pulled back and looking out into the garden and nature will be the focus."
Final thoughts on 2024 trends
"As every year passes and a new one begins, we start to talk about trends and forecasting. Trends are a sign of time passing and reflection of us as people, who are constantly influenced and inspired by the world around us. Whether it's influences from culture, the media or our many complex connections, trends reflect the collective consciousness of a particular era. In 2024, trends like peach fuzz are indicative of a change of direction, away from coldness of stark minimalism and tech heaviness and into a warmer, more inviting era. I love it!" Richardson exclaimed.
