Summary
Australian basketball legend Lauren Jackson has celebrated her 200th WNBL game with a win. Jackson's team, the Southside Flyers, came up against the Melbourne Boomers in this sold out thriller. The two teams battled it out at the Melbourne Sports Centre in front of a packed stadium with the Flyers being able to secure the win over the Boomers, 84-82.
Both teams came out firing in the opening minutes, bringing both heat and energy. Flyers were able to create an early lead in the first quarter, however Boomers remained hot on their tails. The dominant offensive displays from both teams created an electric start to the game, with Southside finishing the quarter with a 7 point buffer (26-19).
The heat did not die down going into the second quarter. The arm wrestle continued with Boomers remaining hot on the Flyers heels. The hustle from the Boomers saw them close the gap in the score to become level midway through the term, however the Flyers were able to gain back a slight lead going into the second half (45-40).
The tussle continued heading into the second half with both teams coming out with strong offensive displays. The Flyers were able to produce a game high 15 point lead during the third quarter, leaving the Boomers fighting to close the deficit. The Flyers ended the term up by 9 (63-54).
The fourth quarter saw the Boomers determined to close the gap in the score. The strong offensive game play saw the Boomers take the lead for a split second before Leilani Mitchell secured a 3 pointer to take back the lead for the Flyers. The arm wrestle came down to the wire with Melbourne missing two 3 pointers in the closing seconds of the game, leaving Southside with the win.
