Announcement posted by Reconciliation NSW 07 May 2024

MEDIA RELEASE: 07 May 2024

Celebrate National Reconciliation week in your organisation by Joining Reconciliation NSW's NRW Virtual Breakfast: Now More Than Ever

During National Reconciliation Week 2024, Reconciliation NSW will host its annual National Reconciliation Week (NRW) Virtual Breakfast. On Wednesday 29 May (commencing 7:30am) we invite organisations, Local Councils, Government departments, schools and community groups across NSW to virtually join with other workplaces across the state to hear from leaders on this year's theme with the topic "Charting a Path Forward: Empowering Communities- Now More Than Ever".

The 2024 NRW theme 'Now More Than Ever' serves as a reminder to all of us that no matter what, the fight for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander rights will —and must —continue. Now more than ever, individuals and organisations have a responsibility to continue the journey of allyship, listening and learning what it means to walk beside and behind Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in the pursuit of equity and equality.

The Breakfast will be held on 29 May on Gadigal Country, in partnership with our host firm Gilbert + Tobin Sydney and will be livestreamed simultaneously to registered organisations across NSW whilst they host their own concurrent NRW events. Reconciliation NSW Co-Chair, Joshua Gilbert says "Now more than ever organisations should be listening to Indigenous leaders about how their Reconciliation Action Plans and organisational commitments can empower Aboriginal communities. We have a diverse group of speakers this year, sharing their knowledge and experience to help organisations consider how they can best influence change and create real and lasting impact for Aboriginal communities in NSW" he said.

The breakfast event will commence with Karen Mundine, CEO of Reconciliation Australia talking about the theme, The Hon. David Harris MP, NSW Minister for Aboriginal Affairs regarding NSW Government priorities, followed by a panel discussion and live Q&A facilitated by Joshua Staines, Reconciliation NSW Board Member; Belinda Huntriss, Aboriginal Education Expert; Mitchell Beggs Mowczan, Aboriginal Health Expert; and Stu Jordan, Sustainable Land Management Expert.

Reconciliation NSW CEO, Tristan Tipps-Webster says "Often organisations want to get involved in National Reconciliation Week but don't know how, or have trouble engaging speakers for events. We've curated a NSW focussed event that will be relevant to many types of organisations on their reconciliation journey. Each registered organisation receives a digital kit, curated to enable a successful virtual NRW event that provokes thought and inspires both the workplace and individuals to get involved in creating better, fairer, and more socially just workplaces and communities."

“This year is an interesting climate to be continuing the work of reconciliation off the back of the Referendum. Organisations are in a unique position to continue the work of walking alongside Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, and learning how their efforts and Reconciliation Action Plans can truly empower communities and make real change.”
