Unisys Helps NSW Students Solve and Prevent Eco-Crimes

Unisys hosts online environmental game for NSW Department of Education and Training

Unisys is helping young Australians become environmentally aware while honing their internet research skills by providing the data centre resources and manpower to host and support an online environmental game called Murder under the Microscope developed and implemented by the Centre for Learning Innovation (CLI), NSW Department of Education and Training (NSW DET).

Since January 2008, students taking part in Murder under the Microscope have formed investigative teams to solve a fictitious eco-crime – based on real life examples – by analysing and researching the evidence, and at the end of June they submitted a management plan to prevent the crime from happening again. Murder under the Microscope is designed to enable teachers to deliver targeted curriculum in a fun context where students are motivated to learn. Over 1,000 teams registered to participate in 2008.

All facets of Murder under the Microscope are delivered via its website, www.microscope.edu.au, which is hosted at the Unisys data centre in Rhodes. In May alone the site received more than 9.2 million hits. On 29 May - the day accusations were due - the site received 729,357 hits as students and teachers logged on to submit their findings.

“Over the five months of Murder under the Microscope, the website is used for everything from team administration and unveiling of clues about the eco-crime through to the students making accusations and submitting their management plans.  Unisys provides the data centre infrastructure and 24/7 support to ensure the site is up and running when students want to access it, coping with peaks in traffic during critical stages of the game,” said Allen Koehn, head of Unisys Public Sector business.

“Statistics on website usage shows that most users access the site after school hours, which confirms that the Murder under the Microscope program is so engaging that the students use their own time to learn.

“Unisys has a long and successful relationship with NSW DET and is happy to support a program that not only makes learning fun but also heightens awareness about environmental issues here in Australia,” Mr Koehn said.
