Wyse and Desktone Partner to Deliver Superior Multimedia Capabilities on Virtual Desktops

Announcement posted by Wyse Technology 17 Sep 2008

Desktone dtFlash Integrates with Wyse TCX Multimedia Technology to Enable Flash in Desktop as a Service (Daas) Environments

Wyse Technology, the global leader in thin computing, and Desktone, Inc., provider of the first solution that enables virtual desktops as an outsourced computing, and Desktone, Inc., provider of the first solution that enables virtual desktops as an outsourced announced at VMworld that they are integrating new Desktone dtFlash technology with Wyse TCX Multimedia, providing the first solution that enables enterprises to use Flash in virtual desktop environments.

"Flash is pervasive in large organizations that rely on interactive, rich media technology.  The lack of Flash support for thin clients has been an issue for these companies and has significantly delayed their adoption support for thin clients of virtualized desktop infrastructure (VDI),"  said Jan Jackman, vice president, IBM Global End User Services.  "IBM leverages the joint Desktone/Wyse solution in our Virtual Infrastructure Access service, the leading client virtualization solution in the market today. Working with Desktone and Wyse we're able to deliver a solution that meet the needs of organizations of all sizes -- providing innovative and scalable provisioning and helping reduce desktop deployment complexity without compromising on security or user experience.

"Wyse created a robust foundation for rich multimedia environments on thin clients.  We're extremely pleased to leverage their technology with dtFlash and, together, enable an unparalleled user experience that provides a much-needed solution for virtual desktops," said Clint Battersby, CTO, Desktone.  "Desktone dtFlash is the latest of several Desktone innovations designed to overcome challenges associated with VDI, and enable companies to easily and quickly adopt virtual desktops as a service."

"As the market leader in thin computing, Wyse is focused on providing solutions that simplify the computing environment," said Ricardo Antuna, Vice President of Product Management and Business Development at Wyse Technology.  "Our TCX suite and virtualized audio technologies set the stage for rich multimedia, and we're excited to team with Desktone in providing extended multimedia—including Flash support—that addresses the growing desktops as a service (DaaS) market."

Wyse TCX Multimedia, which was introduced last year, delivers rich PC-quality multimedia to virtual desktop users.  It works with the RDP and ICA protocols (that connects the virtual machines on the server to the client), accelerating and balancing workload to display rich multimedia on the client, often offloading the task from the server entirely.  The patent-pending Desktone dtFlash technology, which was introduced today, resides in the host virtual machine and acts as the interface between the Flash player and Wyse TCX.  Together they enable a no-compromise approach to virtual computing by allowing users to run wide-ranging multimedia applications, including Flash, on their virtual desktops.  These technologies extend the benefits of the Desktone Virtual-D Platform, which lets enterprises realize the full advantages of centralized virtual desktops without having to build the infrastructure themselves.  Enterprises maintain ownership and control over their desktops, and thin clients, while outsourcing the physical data center infrastructure powering the virtual desktops to service providers.
