Wyse and VMware Customers Champion Thin Clients as Ideal Desktop Virtualization Endpoint Based on Low TCO, Rich Multimedia Capabilities, Ease-of-Use and Security

Virtual Desktop Adoption Continues to Grow as Wyse Combines Hardware and Software Solutions for Best-in-Class End-User Experience

Wyse Technology, the global leader in thin computing, announced today that it heads into the end of 2008 with significant customer momentum including Fortune 1000 companies across a broad range of industries.

Wyse enjoys significant customer traction in industries such as retail, banking, transportation, education, and more.  What they all share in common is the desire to simplify their IT operations without sacrificing application performance.

"Everyone knows that as much as 80 percent of IT's budget is allocated to maintenance, so the concept of thin computing has always been attractive," said Jeff McNaught, Chief Marketing Officer at Wyse Technology.  "What's held this industry back, frankly, is that all of an organization's applications need to work on a virtual desktop, not just the majority of apps.  As our customers can attest, practice has caught up with concept at Wyse."

With the rise of multimedia-based content, and the increasing sophistication of computer users everywhere, it is critical that virtual desktops have the capability to support and deliver advanced application features such as audio and video content, USB peripheral usage, multi-display capabilities, multimedia redirection capabilities, and more.

"VMware Virtual Desktop Infrastructure has the potential to transform how enterprises work, collaborate and compete, enabling them to take control of data and information assets like never before," said Jeff Jennings, Vice President of Desktop Products and Solutions, VMware.  "Wyse understands the importance of delivering virtual clients with an ideal combination of rich user experience, energy savings, mobility and security, making Wyse thin clients a natural choice for VMware VDI customers."

Historically, thin clients were used in task worker environments, but that's changing as enterprises demand client virtualization solutions that meet the needs of knowledge workers.  Wyse's solution to the problem was not to attempt to replace the protocols that connect the server and desktop, but rather to extend them with a technology Wyse calls the TCX Suite.  TCX is the cornerstone to provide customers with thin computing benefits without any compromises on the end-user experience.  All Wyse TCX solutions are back-end agnostic, so customers can access this solution when they are connecting to any of the following datacenter solutions: VMware Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI), Citrix XenDesktop and Microsoft Terminal Services and Hyper-V.

Following are some of the Wyse customers that have benefitted from the Wyse TCX Suite:

"The Regional Transportation District of Denver had one very significant goal: to simplify our PC operations," said Trent Ratcliff, IT Infrastructure Manager.  "Thin client computing was an obvious candidate for us, but we had strict requirements with respect to USB usage and multi-display capabilities.  At the end of the day, the Wyse V10L with TCX was the only solution that gave us all the benefits of thin client computing, while still meeting our needs on the application and multimedia side.  It's a decision that is saving the District hundreds of thousands of dollars over the next 3 to 6 years.  And while TCX was a critical part of our decision, we’ve all been pleasantly surprised with the energy savings.  Having thin clients that use 10 percent of the power of a PC and last more than twice as long has made RTD a significantly more energy-efficient operation."

"We evaluated many different solutions in order to deploy thin clients as part of our virtual desktop strategy," said Lynn Chitwood, IT Server Systems Engineering Manager at Jewelry Television.  "We found Wyse thin clients easier to deploy and easier to manage, but what truly made them stand out from other offerings was Wyse's multimedia redirection capabilities.  For a company such as ours in the broadcast industry, we need our Wyse users accessing our broadcast stream.  Wyse was the only offering that could handle our multimedia content requirements."

"Wyse Thin OS-based thin clients have proven to be a reliable and functional foundation for our client-side connectivity to our VDI-based computing environments," said John Williams, Information Technologies at Qualcomm Incorporated.  "The recent addition of TCX multimedia and TCX USB virtualizer technologies are a leap ahead in overcoming some of the traditional weaknesses of thin computing, and are a look forward into what's in store to make the thin computing experience look and feel more like the traditional desktop. The tightly integrated TCX support between the Wyse thin clients and the VDI backend has been a key factor in our overall selection process."

"We use Wyse thin clients to support users all over the hospital - in admitting, for nursing stations, and in patient rooms," said Tony Wilburn, Network Specialist at Huntsville Hospital in Huntsville, AL.  "While all of these users aren't making use of multimedia applications today, the ones that aren't will be in the future.  Wyse was the only company that was able to help us support all of our applications, whether it is dual-monitor capabilities, USB integration or handling video content."

"It's no easy matter to build your reputation at the intersection of advanced technology and absolute reliability, but that is precisely what we at The Aerospace Corporation have been able to accomplish," said Bill Williams, Senior Project Engineer at The Aerospace Corp.  "It's no surprise that we require that same combination of skills from our partners, and why we are so pleased with the results of our Wyse thin client deployment.  It was imperative to us that the replacement of our desktop PCs have little to no impact on our end users.  With the V10L and its accompanying multimedia capabilities, our users are utilizing all the same applications that previously ran on their desktop PCs, but without the significant IT support that those PCs required."

While multimedia application support is a significant factor in the popularity of Wyse solutions, the bread and butter of thin clients and desktop virtualization remain the same:  better security, improved manageability, increased reliability, a lower TCO, and a significant reduction in energy consumption.

Here are some additional customer reactions to their experience with Wyse thin clients:

"Easy to maintain, easy to deploy and easy to administer.  What more could we ask for," said Marc Driessen Vice President, Dynamic Manufacturing Solutions, Inc.  "In the course of implementing Wyse technologies at one of our recent clients, Weldco-Beales Manufacturing, we found the products to be exceptional.  Not only do the V10L and S10 thin clients we implemented work to perfection, they are so easy to deploy that post implementation IT support isn't even required to add new devices to the network.  Because we provide most of Weldco-Beales' IT support remotely, this level of simplicity is critical and very cost effective for them.  In our experience, if someone can plug in a cable, then they can install a new Wyse thin client."

"Wyse helped us to solve a unique challenge with our call center," said Dave Potter, Director, IT Infrastructure, at Casual Male Retail Group.  "The retail industry requires a great deal of flexibility particularly around the ability to scale to handle extreme peaks.  Our call center reflects that.  By arming our call center representatives with Wyse thin clients instead of costly and bulky PCs, we gave ourselves the means to turn IT on a dime, and make our CSRs productive as soon as they hit the 'start' button."
