Mist of the Perfume River: His Art Lives on

In April 1975, amidst the chaos of war, Lê Thành Nhơn, Vietnam's esteemed artist, gathered his family and fled to Australia by boat. This daring escape marked the beginning of a new chapter for Nhơn, whose artistic legacy continued to flourish.

Three months before his passing in 2002, Lê Thành Nhơn penned a heartfelt letter to his old artist friends, expressing his wish for the statues he sculpted during his time in Vietnam to be displayed for all to enjoy by the 'Mist of the Perfume River' in Huế. This city, which he deeply loved and which cherished him in return, served as a haven for his artistic soul. Each evening at sunset, Nhơn and his fellow artists would stroll down to the Perfume River, where they would engage in lively discussions about art, poetry, music, and life itself.

A Monumental Task: Thirty-Eight Years in the Making

Lê Thành Nhơn envisioned his legacy being accessible to the people of Vietnam and its visitors. This mammoth task, spanning thirty-eight years, has finally come to fruition. Hung returns to Vietnam on the tenth anniversary of his father's passing to witness the realization of his father's dream. He sits with his father's old friends to uncover how they managed to bring these grand sculptures back to life and sees firsthand how his father's art has been embraced by the ancient city of Huế, now a world heritage site.

The film captures the emotional and logistical challenges involved in lifting the heavy sculptures from Saigon and placing them in their rightful place by the Perfume River. It is a testament to the dedication and love of Lê Thành Nhơn's friends and the enduring power of art.

He joins his father's old friends to celebrate the legacy of Lê Thành Nhơn, whose majestic sculptures now grace the most beautiful street, by the most beautiful river, in the most beautiful city in Vietnam. This monumental effort, spanning thirty-eight years, highlights the power of art to transcend time and borders.
