Carlyle Cemetery at Indigo Shire Preserves Heritage with Innovative Interactive Map

Announcement posted by Chronicle.rip 03 Oct 2024

Chronicle Cemetery Software proudly partners with Carlyle Cemetery to launch an interactive map, enhancing access to its historic layout for families and historians to find loved ones and explore its heritage.

The importance of digital transformation for historical records

Established in 1865, Carlyle Cemetery sits on six acres of Crown Land, with an additional six acres aside for future growth. Indigo Shire Council provides the management and administrative support services and the Councillors of the Shire are the Cemetery Trust Trustees.

Two of their key responsibility areas are:

  • ensuring historical and current records are carried accurately into the present and future, and;
  • providing accessible options for people to access these records

In November of 2023 Council began working with the team at Chronicle to implement its digital mapping software. It was a lengthy process that involved surveying the area to generate the map, and then accurately inputting historical information into the new system. A small team worked diligently to preserve the integrity of the records and ensure the best product possible reached the community.

The result is a digital map, accessible on mobile devices, that provides clear locations for people attempting to find grave sites, easy access to the burial information of those interred at Carlyle, records of historical profiles of key figures in the cemetery, and protection of those records for time to come.

The new digital mapping system, available on Indigo Shire's website, allows users to navigate through different sections of the cemetery, including interments, reservations, unidentified plots, and vacant plots. This user-friendly tool is accessible from mobile devices, desktops, and tablets, providing enhanced convenience for those seeking to connect with their heritage.

Honoring the community's commitment to preserving its heritage

Acting CEO Sally Rice of Indigo Shire Council emphasized the importance of this digital transformation, stating, "Carlyle Cemetery is the final resting place for many who called Rutherglen and Wahgunyah home. Through Chronicle's software, we're able to ensure that our burial records, both historic and current, are captured accurately." Ms. Rice also highlighted the emotional significance of the mapping tool, noting that it simplifies the process of searching for ancestors while honoring the community's commitment to preserving its heritage. In addition to the mapping feature, families can create meaningful online memorials, known as "Life Chronicle" stories, to share photos and stories of their loved ones.

Chronicle Cemetery Software is honored to be part of this project, helping Carlyle Cemetery preserve its legacy while embracing modern technology. For more information, read the full news coverage here and explore more updates on our Chronicle News & Events page.
