Townsville Fire dominate Geelong United in Season Opener

Announcement posted by Basketball Australia 30 Oct 2024

WNBL Round 1 Opening Game

Summary

Townsville Fire spoiled Geelong United's WNBL debut with a dominant performance, pulling away halfway through the first quarter to secure a commanding 26-point win.

This game marked a historic moment for Geelong United in their inaugural WNBL 2024/25 season, with Keely Froling scoring both the first points of the game and Geelong United's first-ever points.

Townsville controlled the majority of the match, especially in the paint, where Alicia Froling (17 points) and Lauren Cox (12 points) capitalised on an inexperienced Geelong team, who were also missing star Monique Conti, who's out until her AFLW season wraps up.

The twin rivalry between Keely and Alicia Froling was a highlight, with both players hitting double digits and leading their teams for the night. Alicia ultimately took the edge with her 17 points, 9 rebounds, and 4 blocks, guiding the Fire to victory.
