According to Dr Vincent, Australia's leading health and wellness expert and skin care and antioxidant researcher, maintaining a good skin care regime is not only essential for optimising overall health and wellness and minimising the effects of aging, it can also help to reduce anxiety.
"Certain colours and smells can reduce anxiety. This is a scientific fact that has been researched and tested over many years," Dr Vincent said.
"When we inhale certain smells, such as the aroma of green apples, our heart rate and blood pressure fall, stress hormones like adrenalin decrease and our brainwave activity is heightened in areas showing we are calmer and more clear-minded.
"That is one of the reasons why, I encourage people to use skincare products that feature rich scents of nature."
Dr Vincent emphasised the sense of smell plays a significant role in influencing emotions and certain natural scents such as green apple, lavender and chamomile are particularly effective at reducing anxiety.
"As a scientist who has spent many years in the laboratory researching the benefits of apples, I can confirm that the familiar and refreshing aroma of green apples has been linked to lower levels of cortisol, the body's primary stress hormone and has been shown to calm the mind by activating the limbic system, the brain region associated with emotions and memory," Dr Vincent added.
"Moreover, studies have shown that the smell of crisp apples can offer specific therapeutic benefits beyond anxiety relief. One study revealed that participants who found the scent of apples appealing experienced a significant reduction in migraine symptoms, with shorter migraine episodes. These findings suggest that the green apple scent may not only improve mental health by reducing stress and anxiety but also help alleviate physical discomfort, such as headaches."
Dr Vincent explained that a good skincare product that includes particular scents can also help to reduce anxiety. Using natural scents in skincare products to reduce anxiety can be incredibly beneficial, as certain botanical scents can trigger calmness and relaxation.
Dr Vincent provided his top tips on some top natural scents for anxiety reduction and why they're effective.
Apples
"Adding apple as a natural scent to skincare for anxiety relief delivers significant benefits. The fresh, sweet scent of apple is known to promote relaxation and reduce anxiety. It's often associated with calm and positive emotions, making it helpful for stress relief," Dr Vincent said.
"Apple's scent can trigger pleasant memories, relaxing the mind and reducing cortisol levels, the hormone related to stress. Why not use an apple based skincare product that reduce anxiety and increase your skin health at the same time."
Lavender
"Lavender is well-known for its calming and soothing effects. Its scent has been shown to slow down the nervous system, helping reduce anxiety, stress and even mild insomnia," Dr Vincent said.
"Lavender contains compounds like linalool and linalyl acetate, which can influence neurotransmitters in the brain, helping to reduce heart rate and promote a feeling of calm. Lavender gets a bad rap because it is seen as old fashioned but it is actually extremely versatile."
Chamomile
"Chamomile has anti-inflammatory properties and is great for calming both the mind and skin. It can help with irritability, stress and anxious feelings, Dr Vincent said.
"Chamomile contains apigenin, a compound that binds to receptors in the brain and encourages relaxation. The reality is that most people tend to drink it rather than apply it."
Bergamot
"The citrusy scent of bergamot is uplifting yet calming, making it ideal for reducing anxious feelings while also improving mood," Dr Vincent said.
"Bergamot oil influences the release of dopamine and serotonin, known as the 'feel-good' neurotransmitters, which can help alleviate anxiety."
Rose
"The gentle, floral scent of rose oil is comforting and can help ease emotional tension. It's often used in aromatherapy to support emotional balance and alleviate anxiety," Dr Vincent said.
"Rose oil has been shown to activate the parasympathetic nervous system, inducing a feeling of calm and relaxation."
Dr Vincent emphasised that the mind-skin connection is an important consideration when buying skin care products, especially if you live with anxiety, worry and headaches.
"The sense of smell is directly connected to the brain's emotional centre, so incorporating calming scents into skincare helps bridge the mind-skin connection, reducing stress-induced skin issues. Natural scents can transform a skincare routine into a ritual, enhancing mindfulness and emotional well-being," he said.
"Many of these scents, like apple, lavender and chamomile, have skin-calming properties, which can help with inflammation, redness and irritation, promoting healthier-looking skin. By using skincare products containing these natural scents you're not only nurturing your skin but also supporting your mental health, turning self-care into a truly holistic experience."
About Renovatio
Renovatio Bioscience was founded by Dr Vincent in 2016 following his breakthrough discovery while undertaking antioxidant research at the University of Newcastle. He developed a laboratory technique to extract the world's most potent antioxidants 'activated phenolics' from Australian apples and other produce using only water. His innovative work solved an issue, which had been perplexing scientists all over the world for nearly 80 years.
Dr Vincent patented and translated his innovative work into a range of 'turbo charged' health and wellness products to help people access the world's most potent antioxidants in an 'easy to consume' form.
