Adam Leeuwenhart Explores Masculinity and Control in 'In Sect'

Announcement posted by The Actors' Hub Australia 01 Nov 2024

PERTH, WA - Perth actor and Actors' Hub Alumni, Adam Leeuwenhart brings a nuanced portrayal of masculinity and loyalty to the screen in the upcoming crime thriller "In Sect." Premiering on Saturday, November 2nd, this film promises to engage audiences with its complex characters and gripping narrative.

In "In Sect," Adam plays Sam, a character deeply entwined in the fabric of a cult led by his long-time friend Lilith. "Sam is fiercely loyal and pragmatic, thrust into this life by the support Lilith showed him during his troubled past," Adam explains. However, as the film unfolds, Sam finds himself out of his depth, trying to manage chaos beyond his control—a reflection of the unpredictable dynamics of power and masculinity.

What drew Adam to this project was not only the depth of his character but also the collaborative spirit of the director, Amanda Crewes. "Amanda's commitment to exploring 'what is the female hero' and the dynamic between men and women always really interests me ," Adam notes. "She is a really great collaborator, open to the ever changing state of a film as you work with other creatives - she defines the boundaries of the film and her vision and allows actors to bounce around freely within those boundaries. So the work feels alive without feeling out of control. Her approach allowed the cast and crew to contribute creatively within a defined framework, making the work feel alive and evolving."

Adam, who also took on the role of editor for the film, faced unique challenges in shaping the narrative. A pivotal scene between Sam and Lilith required Adam to step back and embrace a perspective that flipped traditional gender dynamics. "Seeing Amanda's choice live in the cinema was a revelation, showing the strength of letting go for the story's sake," he reflects.

Raised in Claremont and a graduate of John Curtin College of The Arts, Adam has a rich background in theatre and film. Known for his roles in The Blind Eye Trilogy and recent work in "The Surfer" with Nicholas Cage, Adam continues to push boundaries with his compelling performances.
