"Every year, thousands of pets fall victim to snake bites, which can be life-threatening and costly to treat," says Pet Insurance Australia spokesperson Nadia Crighton. "By staying vigilant and prepared, pet owners can save lives and minimise the risks for their beloved companions."

Snake Bites: A Growing Threat in Australia

Australia sees an estimated 6,200 dog snake bite cases annually, with most incidents occurring in rural areas during the warmer months. Common culprits include the highly venomous eastern brown snake, tiger snake, and red-bellied black snake.

According to reports, symptoms of envenomation may not appear immediately, making early intervention crucial. Clinical signs in pets can include:

• Collapse or weakness
• Vomiting or excessive drooling
• Dilated pupils
• Respiratory distress or paralysis

"The good news is that snake bites have a very high survival rate when treated quickly, so if you suspect your pet has been bitten, it is vital to seek veterinary treatment immediately," says Crighton.

What to Do If Your Pet Is Bitten

1. Stay Calm: Reduce panic to handle the situation efficiently.
2. Minimise Movement: Carry your pet to prevent venom spread.
3. Seek Immediate Veterinary Attention: Call ahead to confirm the clinic has antivenom.

Prevention Is Key

"When it comes to snake bites, prevention is paramount," Crighton says. "Getting into the habit of ensuring your yard is unattractive to snakes can help immensely during snake season."

• Keeping yards clear of debris and tall grass.
• Training pets to avoid snakes.
• Monitoring pets during walks in high-risk areas.
• Empty water fountains
• If you suspect you have snakes on your property that need to be removed, look for shedding skins and call in the experts.

"With Christmas just around the corner, ensuring your yard is snake-free could ensure you have a stress-free festive season."

Studies show that 85% of dog snake bites occur in the owner's yard, reinforcing the importance of creating a safe home environment.

Snake bite treatments can also cost thousands of dollars to treat.

"We see the average claim amount around $1,000 and the maximum up near an eye-watering $11,000," Crighton says. "The Northern Territory and Queensland are the top states for claims, followed by Tasmania, South Australia, ACT, New South Wales, West Australia and Victoria."

"It's no surprise that our wee terriers take out the most prevalent breed to encounter a snake," Crighton says.
