Cosmetic expert warns consumers to avoid permanent injectable fillers – bad work can’t be undone

Announcement posted by Invigorate PR 14 Jan 2025

For many people who are familiar with dermal fillers, they understand the wonderful youthful benefits that can be achieved through the addition of a few well placed filler injections in the lips and around the cheeks and jaw line.

According to Dr Eranki, CEO of Cosmetique, Australia's leading chain of cosmetic, injectables and laser hair removal clinics, dermal fillers are one of the most popular injectable treatments in the country. Dermal fillers smooth wrinkles and restore volume to sagging skin. Many people choose to get these injections because the results are noticeable immediately and the recovery time is minimal.

"The brilliant thing about dermal fillers is that they are temporary so if we need to adjust them to achieve a different or more enhanced look at a later time, we can easily do this. They last anywhere from six to 12 months depending on the treatment," Dr Eranki said.

"Further, everyone's face changes due to age, hormones and changes in weight. Therefore it is important to ensure that fillers are adjusted over time to meet the changing nature of your complexion and facial structure."

Dr Eranki warns however that there are some filler products coming into the market that are not reversable and this concerns him greatly.

"The whole point of dermal fillers is that they are temporary and therefore can not cause long term issues should the patient need to change the placement or volume of the filler in future," Dr Eranki emphasised.

"At Cosmetique, we exclusively carry hyaluronic acid based fillers as they are reversible. There are several new, and highly hyped new fillers in the market which are not reversible. As all medical treatments carry risks, use of these fillers may be riskier in inexperienced hands. In addition, they don't allow for changes in the person's facial structure which is highly concerning."

Dr Eranki warns people to avoid permanent fillers.

"Facial fillers have become a popular solution for achieving youthful, plump skin. While temporary fillers are generally considered safe when administered by qualified professionals, permanent facial fillers come with significant risks that should not be overlooked," Dr Eranki said.

Understanding permanent facial fillers

"Permanent facial fillers are injectable substances designed to provide long-lasting or permanent volume to areas of the face," Dr Eranki said.

"Unlike temporary fillers, which are typically made from hyaluronic acid and gradually absorbed by the body, permanent fillers use materials that remain in the tissue indefinitely. Common types of permanent fillers include silicone-based fillers, polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) microspheres and polyacrylamide gel.

"While the promise of long-lasting results may sound appealing, permanent fillers carry a high risk of complications that can have lasting consequences."

Risks of permanent facial fillers

Infection

"Permanent fillers can increase the risk of infection, both at the time of injection and years later. Infections can cause swelling, redness and pain and may require antibiotics or even surgical intervention to resolve," Dr Eranki said.

Granulomas and nodules

"One of the most concerning risks is the formation of granulomas or nodules, hard lumps that form as a reaction to the filler material. These lumps can be unsightly, painful and difficult to treat. In severe cases, they may require surgical removal," Dr Eranki said.

Migration of the filler

"Unlike temporary fillers, permanent fillers do not integrate with the surrounding tissue. This can result in the filler migrating to other areas of the face over time, leading to asymmetry and distorted facial features," Dr Eranki said.

Allergic reactions

"Some individuals may experience allergic reactions to the substances used in permanent fillers. These reactions can range from mild irritation to severe swelling and inflammation," Dr Eranki said.

Difficulty in correcting or removing

"One of the biggest drawbacks of permanent fillers is the difficulty in correcting or removing them. Unlike temporary fillers, which can often be dissolved with an enzyme injection, permanent fillers require surgical removal if complications arise. This process can be invasive, painful, costly and may leave scarring," Dr Eranki said.

Aging effects

"As the face naturally ages, the position and appearance of permanent fillers may change, leading to an unnatural or distorted look. What may appear youthful and balanced at the time of injection can become disproportionate over time as the skin and underlying structures change with age," Dr Eranki said.

Long-term complications

"Because permanent fillers remain in the body indefinitely, the long-term risks are difficult to predict. Complications may arise years after the initial injection, making it challenging to address issues that occur later in life," Dr Eranki said.

Why temporary dermal fillers are a safer and more effective option

"Temporary fillers, such as those made from hyaluronic acid, offer a safer and more flexible alternative to permanent fillers," Dr Eranki said.

"They also gradually break down and are absorbed naturally by the body, reducing the risk of long-term complications. If there are any issues with temporary fillers, they can often be corrected by dissolving the filler with an enzyme injection.

"Temporary fillers allow for adjustments over time, ensuring that the treatment evolves with the patient's natural aging process."

Dr Eranki explained that temporary dermal fillers are safe and have been in use for many years.

"The most important issue for people is to choose a qualified professional with experience in undertaking filler treatments and prioritise safety over longevity."

Dr Eranki emphasised that while permanent facial fillers may promise long-lasting results, the risks associated with these treatments are significant. From infections and granulomas to migration and difficulty in removal, the potential complications far outweigh the benefits. For those seeking facial rejuvenation, temporary dermal fillers provide a safer and more manageable alternative.
