Following the decision by Finland's Green Party to endorse nuclear energy as a 'sustainable energy' option, Dick Smith has asked Australian Green Party leader Mr Adam Bandt when he is going to follow the eminently sensible and rational decision of the Finnish Green Party and support nuclear being part of the mix in Australia.

"The latest public opinion polls from Finland show a strong majority in support of nuclear power in the country as a whole.  The latest poll, conducted in 2021, showed 74 percent backing nuclear, with only 18 percent opposed," Dick says.

Smith's stance is in keeping with Australian sentiment, according to recent polling by the Lowy Institute, which outlines that those that are pro-nuclear represent 61% of the population. According to the poll, six in ten Australians say they 'somewhat' or 'strongly' support Australia using nuclear power to generate electricity, while a significant minority (37%) 'somewhat' or 'strongly' oppose it.

Finnish Green Party MP Atte Harjanne told the Alliance of Science that "sufficient supply of low-carbon energy with minimal environmental footprint is key to building a sustainable future."

Harjanne, who is Vice chair and Leader of the Green parliamentary group added, "too often we see the debate stuck in putting renewables and nuclear against each other, when in fact we should be making sure we efficiently drive the use of fossil fuels down as quickly as possible."
