OfficeMax unifies communications in New Zealand with Nortel

Announcement posted by Nortel 29 Jan 2009

OfficeMax, one of the top three office products companies in the world, recently deployed a new unified communications network from Nortel with the intention of cutting costs, improving its environmental credentials, and taking its customer service standards to the next level.

OfficeMax deployed a completely new IT infrastructure following its decision to relocate its data centre to Highbrook Business Park, East Tamaki, Manukau, and chose Nortel because of its heritage in voice communications and its track record in data networking.

The company expects to save substantial costs by running its regional communications between Australia and Auckland, New Zealand across a wide-area IP network. The new network will also give more than 400 staff in Auckland access to advanced communications functionality – such as unified messaging, caller ID and conferencing – which they didn’t have before.

OfficeMax employs 41,000 people worldwide including 835 in New Zealand.  A key global player, OfficeMax New Zealand prides itself on its local focus.

“We had three goals going into the design of a new network: improving our ability to service our customers using voice and other means of communication; cutting communications costs across the Tasman; and continuing our program of environmental improvement that’s already earned us the Enviro-Mark NZ Gold standard in New Zealand,” says Kwok Leung Wan, National IT Manager, OfficeMax New Zealand.

“We wanted a technology provider that clearly understood our business objectives, and could tailor a solution to our specific requirements,” says Leung. “Fortunately we found in Nortel a company with a proud heritage in both voice and data networks, that was already aligned with our major software supplier (Microsoft), and that could demonstrate its environmental credentials using energy-efficient equipment.”

Nortel’s solution for OfficeMax includes the flagship Communication Server (CS) 1000 IP PBX, Nortel 1120E IP handsets, Nortel 1150E IP handsets, Nortel Ethernet Routing Switch 5520 (24- and 48-port), Nortel 2033 IP Conferencing phones, Nortel Contact Centre 6.0 and Call Pilot unified messaging.
