SA Left in the Dark No More: Federal Battery Rebate Offers Long-Term Relief

Announcement posted by Solar Energy Adelaide Newsroom 15 Apr 2025

New $2.3B national program could finally deliver battery storage support to South Australians after previous battery rebate was axed in 2022 by State Labor.

Adelaide, South Australia - April 15, 2025

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
South Australians may finally see long-term energy relief after years of being left without battery support, thanks to a new $2.3 billion federal battery rebate announced by Labor ahead of the 2025 election. If implemented, the Cheaper Home Batteries Program will deliver a 30% discount on eligible solar battery installations from 1 July 2025, offering hope to those struggling with some of the highest power prices in the world.

While other states — including NSW and WA — continue to benefit from state-based battery rebates, South Australia's Home Battery Scheme, introduced in 2018, was scrapped in 2022. Since then, households and small businesses in Adelaide have had no access to ongoing support for battery storage.

"People in South Australia have been waiting for this," Eleftheriou said. "The end of the state scheme left a lot of families and businesses out in the cold. This national rebate finally levels the playing field and offers meaningful, ongoing energy savings."

Installing a solar battery gives homeowners the opportunity to significantly reduce — or even completely eliminate — their electricity bills, depending on the size of the battery and their household energy use. A typical 11.5kWh battery system, which currently costs around $13,000-$14,000, could be reduced by up to $4,000 with the rebate applied.

·  The rebate will operate under the Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme (SRES), similar to the current rooftop solar rebate.

·  It will provide a 30% upfront discount on eligible battery installations.

·  The rebate value will decrease each year until it expires in 2030, encouraging early uptake.

·  Applies to battery systems between 5kWh and 50kWh in usable capacity.

·  Eligible for systems installed alongside new or existing rooftop solar.

·  Available to both residential households and small businesses.

"This rebate couldn't come at a better time for South Australians," said Reefe Eleftheriou, Director at Solar Energy Adelaide. "For years, our customers have understood the value of battery storage but simply couldn't afford the upfront cost. Now, they might finally have a real, long-term solution to take control of their energy use."

Labor has confirmed that installations completed between now and 1 July will be eligible, as long as systems are not turned on until the start date.

At the time of writing, the Federal Opposition has not made a public statement regarding this proposal. Solar Energy Adelaide will continue to monitor developments and provide updates as more information becomes available.
