Luke’s Bánh Mì Opens New Bakery on Clarendon Street

Surprise! There’s a bun in the oven for Luke’s Bánh Mì. Their brand new bakery location is coming to South Melbourne

For most Melburnians, the first name that comes to mind when dreaming of a crispy, crunchy, and flavourful Bánh Mì is Luke's Bánh Mì (previously known as Luke's Vietnamese). The iconic Melbourne bakery celebrates its third year with a brand new store opening on Clarendon Street and a surprise new menu item.

Luke's has been the humble hero of Melbourne's Vietnamese food scene for over a decade. Owner and visionary Luke Vu reflects on his baking career as a little boy working in his family's wood-fired oven bakery in Vietnam: "My cultural heritage has always been a constant source of inspiration from the very beginning". Selling and delivering their crunchy-on-the-outside and soft-centered French-Vietnamese baguette rolls to street vendors by bicycle says a lot about his commitment and work ethic. 

Hailing from Melbourne's North, Luke's Bánh Mì brings its original flavour-bomb Bánh Mì menu to South Melbourne village. 

As General Manager, Christina Murrell announced, "Surprise! It's the bakery baby we always wanted". The decision to open a new bakery was made only three weeks earlier when the opportunity came knocking on Luke's door, merely days away from the launch of their Bay Street bakery opening, which was postponed due to building issues.

"It ticked all the boxes. The location is perfectly positioned in the heart of the South Melbourne village amongst commercial and residential buildings. There is an existing bakery on site, so we can move in and start baking straight away," says Founder and Executive Baker, Luke Vu, of the decision to open a new bakery in just three weeks. 

Many secret ingredients are involved in Luke's famous recipes, marinades, and sauces that, when combined, create the signature oh-so-satisfying balance of flavours in each bite that keeps everyone coming back for more. It's the quality of the ingredients and care that goes into every step of building each of Luke's Bánh Mì; daily baked baguettes, edge-to-edge spread of home-made mayo and pâté, the generous portion of protein balanced with a good amount of made in-store pickled vegetables and signature sauces that makes each bite so good. 

Luke's Bánh Mì Calarendon Street will offer all of the famed menu items that everyone knows and loves from their Puckle Street bakery, including the very popular Luke's Pork 'n Pork, with a brand new item being introduced to the menu. Introducing Luke's limited edition Chicken, Sweetcorn and Cheese Spring Rolls. A combination of salty and sweet, with a satisfying golden and crunchy outer layer.
