Laser hair removal has come a long way, but many Australians do not realise just how much. According to Dr Vivek Eranki, CEO of Cosmetique, a new generation of laser technology is delivering faster, safer and more effective results than ever before, with less discomfort, better long term outcomes and greater value for clients.
Dr Vivek Eranki is the CEO of Cosmetique, Australia's first accredited cosmetic clinic with locations across Australia. Cosmetique has an enviable reputation for delivering high quality beauty, cosmetic, injectables and laser hair removal services and Dr Eranki is encouraging Australians to seek out the latest laser hair removal technology in preparation for summer.
"The early days of laser hair removal were riddled with problems, from outdated equipment to undertrained operators," Dr Eranki said.
"Technology has advanced significantly, but not every clinic has kept up. Consumers need to know what to look for to ensure they are taking advantage of the revolutionary technology that is now available and avoiding older style machines."
The newest systems are far more sophisticated than their predecessors. They combine multiple laser wavelengths in a single pulse and in motion delivery, allowing the energy to reach different depths of the hair follicle simultaneously. This enables more comprehensive hair removal, improved results and the ability to treat a broader range of skin tones and hair colours including red, blonde and darker hair.
In motion delivery means the laser can be moved continuously over the skin rather than stopping and starting, making treatments faster, more even and less uncomfortable. Combined with advanced cooling technology, these systems dramatically reduce heat and redness. In many cases, numbing cream is no longer needed and clients can return to normal activities immediately.
"New laser platforms not only feel better, they also work faster and require fewer sessions to achieve smooth, lasting results. That means less time in clinic, better outcomes and lower costs for clients," Dr Eranki said.
Dr Eranki, who founded Cosmetique as Australia's first network of fully accredited cosmetic clinics, is encouraging Australians to ask four key questions before choosing where to undergo laser hair removal treatment.
Does the clinic use the latest generation laser technology?
"Technology released in the last 12 to 24 months offers dramatically improved comfort, speed and versatility compared to older systems," he said.
"When looking for laser hair removal services, don't be afraid to ask the clinic how old their technology is. If it is more than two years old, look for a clinic with newer technology."
Is the clinic accredited under the National Safety and Quality Primary Community Healthcare (NSQPCH) Standards?
"Once you find a clinic with new laser hair removal technology, you then need to check whether the clinic is accredited against the National Safety and Quality Primary Community Healthcare (NSQPCH) Standards," Dr Eranki said.
"This level of accreditation ensures the clinic meets nationally recognised benchmarks for safety, infection control, patient care and clinical quality. It is not just about cosmetic results, it is about health standards you can trust.
"While having this level of accreditation is not mandatory, clinics that voluntarily go through the process of attaining this level of accreditation demonstrate that they are committed to the highest standards of clinical care."
What training and credentials do the technicians have?
"When choosing a clinic for laser hair removal services, you not only need to consider the type of technology used, but also the level of technician training and experience," Dr Eranki said.
"It is good practice to ask who will be operating the machine. Are they clinically trained? Are they supervised? Proper laser use requires clinical knowledge and hands on expertise. This is your skin, your safety, we want people to treat it that way.
"To become a laser technician in Australia, you need to have a high school diploma or equivalent, as well as a certificate or diploma in laser technology. However we recommend that the technician also boasts at least five years experience and additional training."
When should you start laser hair removal
In Australia, there isn't a specific legal age requirement for laser hair removal, but most clinics recommend waiting until after puberty, generally around age 18, to start treatments. Some clinics may consider treating individuals as young as 12, especially for non-sensitive areas, with parental consent and a consultation.
Dr Eranki recommends booking now to take advantage of cooler months, when skin is typically less sun exposed and better suited to laser hair removal.
"Autumn and early winter are the ideal times to start," he said.
"You will be smooth, confident and ready by summer, with fewer treatments needed when the technology and technique are right."
