This International Clinical Trials Day (20th May 2025), it's time to recognise the Australian innovation helping to bring ground-breaking medical treatments for a range of health conditions and diseases to people all over the world, faster.

Around 20,000 clinical trials have been conducted in Australia over the past two decades[1]. Trials can take place in hospitals, universities, private clinics and dedicated medical research institutes.

Clinical trials are crucial to the development of evidence-based preventative medicines. In addition, participation in clinical trials can also provide patients with opportunities to access new, alternative treatments.

However, research reveals that around 80%[2] of clinical trials are being delayed due to recruitment issues, yet 79% of people would consider being involved in a clinical trial.[3] In addition, 69% of people would be open to hearing about clinical trials from their GP or Health Care Practitioner.[4]

Melbourne-based gastroenterologist, Associate Professor Jason Tye Din, says that awareness is key to greater participation in clinical trials.

"The way that we are going to improve treatment for a range of different conditions is by having people participate in clinical trials. It's such a crucial step for new treatments to be approved and available for patients who could benefit from them."

Tania Gruar from Melbourne suffers from Coeliac disease and recently participated in a clinical trial to help others navigate this life-long condition.

"The clinical trials process has been very reassuring for me. I've had access to expert medical teams that have answered all my questions and set my mind at ease throughout the whole process."

Evrima Technologies is an Australian-born patient referral network that closes the gap between trials and patients and GPs, and connects world-class researchers to the wider community.

Evrima Founder and CEO, Charlotte Bradshaw says that technology can work in partnership with the medical community to help get new medical treatments to the people who need them, sooner.

"A clear gap exists between patients finding out about clinical trials and then having enough information to commit to being part of the trial process.

"Evrima's tech-enabled patient referral network Evripath has been built as an education and simple referral resource for GPs to find out about existing clinical trials in their communities, and how they may benefit specific patients.

"Our platform delivers up-to-date information about current patient-centred clinical trials, and helps to identify patients that might be suitable, so GPs can provide patients with informed advice about benefits of participation, specific to the patient's situation," said Charlotte Bradshaw.

Evrima's vision is to change the game in clinical research to increase access, awareness, and participation. Evrima is striving to make a global impact on clinical trial timelines and enable the industry to advance medical research swiftly, so that new medicines and vaccines are available as quickly as possible.

"Clinical trials are at the heart of medical advances which look into new ways to treat, prevent, or detect disease. Volunteers often do so to help contribute to advancing scientific research, knowing that they are participating in the hope of helping future generations," said Charlotte Bradshaw.

"Greater awareness and education among GPs and the general public will support increased participation in trials moving forward."
