For Immediate Release
CartridgesDirect is excited to celebrate the impressive milestone of 50,000 ink cartridges recycled through their sustainability initiative, in partnership with Cartridges4PlanetArk.
To celebrate the milestone, the team estimated how much plastic they've prevented from entering the ocean, and how many turtles CartridgesDirect could be responsible for saving through their recycling efforts. Referencing previous studies on turtle mortality and plastic waste in Australia, this figure is estimated at 18 or 19 turtles each year, or 130 turtles in total since the program began.
This figure demonstrates the impact of their customer-led recycling campaign, with data-driven estimates to provide a tangible example. Research included identifying how many turtles die each year in Australian waters from plastic, and how much plastic would end up in the ocean from waste produced by CartridgesDirect - had these 50,000 cartridges not been recycled.
Quick Stats:
- At least 1,000 turtles die each year in Australian waters due to plastic.
- 4% of all plastic waste produced in Australia ends up in the ocean each year.
- A turtle that eats one piece of plastic has almost a 1 in 4 chance of dying.
- CartridgesDirect has saved 1.5 tonnes of ink cartridges from entering landfill.
- These recycling efforts could have saved 130 turtles from death since 2018.
A Successful Partnership With Cartridges4PlanetArk
Partnering up with collection agency Cartridges4PlanetArk seven years ago, the program aims to make recycling empty ink cartridges as quick, easy and accessible as possible. When customers purchase genuine ink cartridges from CartridgesDirect online, their order is delivered with an empty satchel. All the customer needs to do is fill it with used, empty cartridges and take it to the nearest Australia Post parcel drop - postage is pre-paid. It's then sent to the appropriate recycling centre where cartridges can be turned into new products and kept out of landfill.
This campaign is backed by the major manufacturers of printers and cartridges, including HP and Canon. In total, 50,000 ink cartridges have been successfully recycled with CartridgesDirect so far.
