Sydney, Australia - Clare McCann, acclaimed Australian journalist, filmmaker, and founder of the Sydney Women's International Film Festival, has issued a heartbreaking public appeal following the tragic death of her 13-year-old son, who took his own life after enduring months of relentless bullying at South Sydney High School—best known as the filming location for the popular Netflix series Heartbreak High.
Tragically, this is not the first reported student suicide linked to bullying at the school. Despite repeated formal complaints to the school, the Department of Education, and Children's Services; all backed by medical evidence and a confirmed PTSD diagnosis, no effective action was taken to protect her son.
Now Clare is racing against time to raise $300,000 within 5 days to fund cryopreservation of his body, a process that could offer the possibility of revival in the future.
"I begged for help. I submitted complaints. I shared medical records. No one listened" said Clare. "Now I have one chance to preserve my son's body before it's too late. And I will not let this happen in silence."
"Atreyu used to dream of being cryogenically frozen. It was something we planned to do together— so that one day, we could come back to life and explore the universe together. We dreamed of flying through galaxies, visiting distant planets, staying together forever."
Clare added: "He was just 13. He deserved a future. If the school and government had acted when I asked, he might still be alive."
The GoFundMe campaign launched this week includes the full story, photos, and documentation.
Clare is calling on Australians and the global community to act fast before the 5-day window closes. Donate or learn more at: https://gofund.me/228645f7 Clare is available for interview.
