It's elegant, durable and dominating Australian homes, herringbone hybrid flooring has officially become the nation's most in-demand flooring style.
Inspired by classic European design, herringbone flooring has long been seen as a luxury finish, stylish, sophisticated and often out of reach for the average household. Hybrid flooring technology has changed that.
"Traditional herringbone timber looks incredible but can cost a small fortune to install and maintain," Jim's Flooring, cofounder, Nick Nassis said.
"Herringbone hybrid gives you the same stunning look for a fraction of the cost and it wears better. You don't need sanding, polishing or sealing. It's scratch-resistant, waterproof and ready for real life.
"When it comes to installation and comfort, the underlay is pre-attached to the product making it easier to install. This also helps with noise reduction in the home as well as the underlay acts as a sound-absorbing barrier ."
Better performance, better value, better design. Hybrid flooring blends the beauty of timber with the toughness of laminate and the water resistance of vinyl and when laid in the eye-catching herringbone pattern, it instantly elevates the feel of any room, whether it's a home entryway, open-plan living space or even a bathroom.
"For less money, you're getting a premium finish that's actually more durable," Nassis said.
"You can mop it, live on it, let your kids run across it and it still looks amazing. It's one of the smartest flooring investments a homeowner can make."
Most common question asked about hybrid flooring
"I am often asked what hybrid flooring is made of and it is a good question,"Nassis said.
"There are a few different types of hybrid flooring but the most common is SPC (stone and plastic composite).
Most hybrid flooring is made from a combination of materials that blend the best features of laminate and vinyl flooring. It typically consists of four layers each designed for durability, water resistance and visual appeal.
The top layer, or also known as the wear layer is a clear, hard-wearing protective coating that guards against scratches, stains, UV damage and general wear and tear. It's often made of aluminium oxide or a similar tough resin. The next decorative layer consists of a high-resolution printed image that mimics the look of natural timber, stone or other textures. It gives hybrid flooring its realistic wood-look appearance.
The third layer known as the core layer is what makes hybrid flooring truly unique. It's usually made from one of two types: SPC (stone plastic composite) or WPC (wood plastic composite). The wood version is slightly softer under foot. The last layer is called the backing layer which provides the acoustic underlay.
"For a fraction of the cost of real wood, hybrid flooring provides a luxurious finish, is more scratch and dent resistant, extremely durable and water resistant," Nassis said.
"In styles like herringbone, it delivers a premium finish and this is why property owners all over the country can't get their hands on it quick enough."
Nassis emphasised that since launching Jim's Flooring and installing herringbone hybrid flooring, he has seen properties improve their look and liveability significantly.
"Some of our customers have even installed herringbone hybrid to improve the premium look of their property to sell it for a much higher price. It really can transform a home in such a significant way," Nassis said.
"Be warned, like anything there are different qualities of hybrid flooring available on the market. Do not opt for the cheapest you can find, talk to an expert and ensure you purchase a quality brand. This will ensure you achieve the best outcome now and into the future."
