Leading health and wellness expert, Dr Vincent, is calling on Australian parents to put apples back on the daily menu, warning that a failure to build good habits in childhood could set children up for poor health in adulthood.
"My research over the last few years shows that not enough children are being introduced to apples and the health benefits of this extraordinary and often under-rated piece of fruit," Dr Vincent said.
Dr Vincent is a revered clinical nutritionist, food scientist, antioxidant researcher and founder of Renovatio Bioscience, a well-known Australian company that makes skin care, supplements and pantry products from 100 percent Australian apples. The products contain activated phenolics, the world's most potent form of antioxidants capable of being rapidly absorbed by the body. He also translates cutting-edge research into actionable advice for individuals looking to achieve better health through nutrition.
Apple in the lunch box: A rare habit
Over the last three years, Dr Vincent has surveyed some 1,000 Australians and found that only 27 percent said their parents regularly included an apple in their lunch box growing up.
"This is a national wake-up call," Dr Vincent said.
"We're raising children on convenience snacks and forgetting one of the most powerful, proven health habits, eating an apple a day.
"While a large number of people said they often received cut up pieces of fruit, carrots, celery sticks and other healthy treats, less than 50 percent were given apples. This is such a shame.
"In our busy lifestyles, very few people have the time to create snacks like the ones they received in their lunch box growing up. An apple is an easy option, it doesn't need any preparation at all and its skin acts as a natural wrapper, keeping it clean and ready to eat.
"Some people said they were given an apple every day in their lunch box and still eat an apple every day today as a grown up. The habit has stayed with them.
"It is a shame we can't say the same for everyone which is why it is so important for parents to start building good apple habits with their children while they are young. Adding an apple to the lunch box every day is a good starting point. Apples are also cost effective and packed full of goodness."
Why apples are the ultimate superfood
Apples are rich in dietary fibre and polyphenols, a type of antioxidant that plays a critical role in cellular protection, inflammation control and gut health. Regular apple consumption has been linked to better digestion, improved cardiovascular health, better skin, weight control and even mental clarity.
"Apples are incredibly powerful when eaten regularly and from a young age. They stabilise blood sugar, help with appetite regulation and improve nutrient absorption. The benefits aren't just short- term, they compound across a lifetime," Dr Vincent said.
One apple a day equals lifelong benefits
Dr Vincent, who holds a PhD in food science and molecular nutrition, said parents underestimate just how much good a single apple a day can do.
"Just one apple a day introduces natural antioxidants, supports digestion, protects against oxidative stress and helps reduce systemic inflammation. Over time, these benefits significantly lower the risk of chronic disease, including heart disease, diabetes and even some cancers," he said.
"Teaching your child to eat one apple a day is not just about fibre or a snack, it's a long-term investment in disease prevention."
Dr Vincent also emphasised research shows that low-glycemic, antioxidant-rich diets can reduce acne. That's why many teens who eat an apple a day see visible improvements in their skin.
The antioxidant advantage starts in childhood
As founder of Renovatio Bioscience, Dr Vincent has spent years researching activated phenolics, the world's most potent and bioavailable antioxidants extracted from Australian apples. His supplements, skin care and pantry products are based on the science of antioxidant defence and disease prevention.
"Antioxidants help neutralise free radicals, unstable molecules that can damage cells and accelerate ageing and disease. When children consume antioxidants regularly, they build stronger internal defence systems early. This can reduce their lifetime risk of serious illnesses like cancer, cardiovascular disease and neurodegenerative conditions," Dr Vincent said.
Better teeth, too
Apples also support dental health.
"Biting and chewing an apple stimulates saliva flow, which helps reduce plaque build-up and maintain oral hygiene," Dr Vincent said.
"While not a replacement for brushing, apples offer a natural clean that supports healthy teeth and gums."
A simple daily act that shapes lifelong health
Dr Vincent said parents shouldn't overthink it.
"Forget the fad foods, gimmicky snack packs and sugar-loaded 'healthy' bars. Just start with one apple a day," he said.
"It's inexpensive, easy and clinically powerful. We need to raise a generation of kids who instinctively reach for real food. It starts at home and it starts with something as simple as an apple."
