Waiting until you land before organising your eSIM risks getting stung with hefty international roaming fees, as Turkey joins the list of nations blocking eSIM providers in the name of national security. The answer to this issue is simple and provided by eSIM and unlimited international data plan specialists, Simify.

Turkey's Information and Communication Technologies Authority (BTK) recently blocked access to dozens of international eSIM providers with little warning, as part of its ongoing crackdown on foreign telecommunications services.
Access to the websites and apps of many major eSIM providers is now blocked within Turkey, preventing tourists from purchasing foreign eSIM services after they arrive in the country.
In recent years, eSIMs have become an increasingly popular alternative to relying on physical SIM cards for tourists, business travellers and digital nomads. eSIM technology is embedded directly into modern smartphones and tablets, allowing users to easily switch between mobile networks as they travel.
As a result, eSIMs allow travellers to bypass expensive international roaming charges, avoid the hassle of buying local SIM cards on arrival and escape the risk of relying on potentially insecure public Wi-Fi.
With the latest crackdown, Turkey joins countries such as China in blocking access to eSIM providers in the name of national security. While no official explanation has been issued regarding the reason for the coordinated blocking of eSIM providers, the move aligns with Turkey's ongoing media and telecommunications crackdown.
While the block prevents travellers from arranging international eSIM services from within Turkey, it does not prevent them from purchasing eSIMs before they arrive in the country.
Turkey's sudden eSIM crackdown during the peak tourist season caught many international travellers off guard and is an excellent example of why it pays for tourists, business travellers and digital nomads to plan ahead when going to any country, says Aidan Butler, co-founder of Australian international roaming provider and eSIM specialist Simify.
"eSIM has been a real game-changer for international travellers, not just in terms of saving money but also ensuring that they stay safe when using their devices around the world," Butler says.
"We've become so reliant on our mobile devices when travelling, from navigation and hotel bookings to staying in touch with family and friends back home, that these days no-one can afford to get cut off while they're abroad."
Recently rebranding from SimsDirect, Simify was founded in 2018 by two young Australian entrepreneurs, who were frustrated with expensive and restrictive roaming packages. Tapping into pent-up demand for a better deal, the business quickly grew to more than 300,000 customers.
Today, Simify offers mobile coverage in more than 150 countries, providing international travellers peace of mind in the form of unlimited data for up to 90 days, with no need to worry about top-ups or extra roaming fees.
"Thanks to eSIM people now take this kind of convenience for granted," Butler says, "but recent events in Turkey highlight the fact that things can change very quickly - so it's better to get your eSIM up and running before you fly, rather than risk getting caught out at the other end."
