Many Australians Delay Therapy for Over a Year — Melbourne Psychologist Says That Could Make Recovery Harder

Almost half of Australians wait more than 12 months to seek professional help after first noticing symptoms of mental health difficulties, research suggests.
That delay, says Dr Simon Vincenzi, Principal Psychologist at Clarity Psychology in Carlton and St Kilda, can make recovery more challenging — particularly for conditions such as trauma, anxiety, OCD, and depression.

"The longer distress goes unaddressed, the more it can become ingrained in daily life," Dr Vincenzi explained. "It's not just about feeling worse — untreated symptoms can affect relationships, work, physical health, and self-esteem."

Why people put off seeing a psychologist

According to Dr Vincenzi, there are three common reasons people delay therapy:

  1. Uncertainty about the process — Many feel anxious about what to expect or whether they'll 'say the right thing' in a session.
  2. Time pressures — Work, family, and other commitments make it hard to schedule appointments.
  3. Belief they should manage alone — Some see asking for help as a sign of weakness or worry they're overreacting.

Breaking down the barriers

Clarity Psychology has designed its approach to make taking that first step less daunting. Both its Carlton and St Kilda clinics feature warm, private therapy rooms, and offer after-hours and flexible appointment options to suit busy schedules.

Initial sessions, Dr Vincenzi says, are about building trust and helping clients feel comfortable:

"We take time to explain the process, answer questions, and ensure the psychologist is the right fit. The goal is to create a safe, nonjudgmental space where people can explore what's going on at their own pace."

Early help can mean better outcomes

Evidence shows that earlier intervention can reduce the severity and duration of mental health issues, and may prevent them from escalating.

"Seeking help doesn't mean you're committing to years of therapy," Dr Vincenzi noted. "Sometimes even a few sessions can help someone feel more in control and give them strategies to move forward."

Taking the first step

Dr Vincenzi encourages anyone who has been struggling — whether for weeks, months, or longer — to book an initial consultation.

"Your mental health matters just as much as your physical health," he said. "You don't have to wait for things to reach a crisis point before getting support."
