First impressions matter and in today's competitive job market, recruiters say it's often the smallest details that make the biggest difference, from your shoes and hair to your handbag.
According to hiring experts, job interviews aren't only about strong answers and confident conversation, they are also subtle assessments of how candidates present, organise and carry themselves, literally.
"The way you arrive tells recruiters how you operate under pressure," Hustle & Grace Official, founder and CEO, Iluka Cindi Greentree said.
"Your appearance, your bag, your shoes, they all send cues about who you are before you even speak."
The science of silent signals
Recruiters often look for calmness, attention to detail and preparedness, qualities that can be inferred through body language and presentation. A scuffed shoe or chaotic bag can unintentionally suggest carelessness or disorganisation. Conversely, a clean, structured look signals composure and respect for the process.
Respected recruiter, Lisa Martin, said COVID has changed a lot of rules in recruiting.
"A lot of firms recruited via screen during the pandemic and brought in people who ended up not being the right fit. This became very obvious when staff returned to the office and they turned up to work for the first time and their approach to presentation and reluctance to change, didn't fit organisational brand and culture," Martin said.
"Many businesses have completely changed their approach and now only recruit based on in- person interviews."
Greentree said her customers have sent feedback thanking her brand for their bag and said that it helped them get the job.
"In interviews, employers want to see that you're composed and capable," Greentree explained.
"A bag that's tidy, practical and organised gives off the impression that you're someone who plans ahead and takes pride in their work."
What recruiters really notice
Recruiters pay close attention to:
- Shoes: Polished, well-kept shoes suggest respect, punctuality and pride in presentation.
- Hair: A neat, professional style implies attention to grooming and discipline.
- Clothing: Well-fitted, neutral attire communicates self-awareness and adaptability.
- Jewellery: Simple, thoughtful pieces suggest refinement and restraint.
- Handbag or briefcase: The clincher, a well-organised bag signals diligence, reliability and readiness.
"Your bag, in particular, says a lot about how you manage life's chaos. A tangle of receipts, cables and lipsticks can read as flustered; an orderly layout with essentials in place conveys calm confidence," Greentree added.
Martin added that a high quality well organised bag can be further showcased by including a quality note pad and pen, premium diary and business looking phone case, all in good clean order.
"When an opportunity arises, candidates should take these items from their bag for note taking or diary scheduling. This showcases the bag and its contents to recruitment panel members giving them insight into the way you operate and the manner in which you would represent their brand at meetings," Martin emphasised.
The confidence connection
Modern professionals juggle hybrid lives, switching between meetings, travel, home and social commitments. As Greentree puts it, employers aren't just hiring skill sets; they're hiring people who can handle complexity with grace. Presentation is an external reflection of internal capability.
Her brand, Hustle & Grace Official, was built around that philosophy, creating intelligently designed, polished accessories for women who move seamlessly through multiple roles. The Iluka Tote, for instance, was crafted to project exactly that: poise and preparedness in motion. Greentree is focused on taking on the world's leading designer bags to permanently position Hustle & Grace as the bag of choice for Australian women.
First impressions last
When it comes to getting the job, recruiters agree, it's not vanity, it's signalling. Every element of your presentation, down to your handbag, tells a story about who you are and how you work. So next time you walk into an interview, remember: you're not just carrying your résumé, you're carrying your brand.
